Exteriors Design Dilemma

Help with curb appeal

I have recently purchased a house in the UK but I need some help with how to improve the curb appeal. We changed the windows so they are now dark wood on the outside not white.

All ideas welcome!

Looks a perfectly nice house. Needs some planting at the front maybe in pots, and you really must change the front door, it’s very dated, otherwise looks good.

I second the above comment; replace the existing front door for a timber or composite door, add some Plants/grass to soften the exterior and you could consider jet-washing the paving...

Hi missmjbs, I've added a couple of photos, I need a second coat (too windy today - I don't want grit and bugs stuck in my paint!) I'm still a little uncertain about the green and was wondering myself about a cream or a more grey green... however I think you'll agree it looks quite a lot different! I don't think my partner will allow painting of the garage doors - I'm still working on that...

Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? Tanks all so much for these amazing ideas!! I think once I have implemented these the overall look will work - I just need to picture the final result as I do each bit separately. @south Wales - I had considered grass but the front of the house is covered by a huge oak tree canopy in the summer, the tree would probably dry everything out. It blocks most of the direct sunlight out completely. Do you think grass is still achievable? @suesykes - yours looks amazing, is that a rhododendron I can spot? @michaeldbutler - I used an iPad app called color effects @sorayasohal - thanks for your great ideas, I am very keen to use a couple of potted plants in front of the pillars. I just need to make sure they don't get stolen! @arthur road - many thanks for this excellent list, I hadn't really considered using a variety of different plants as the bed is small, but it's a great idea! @ensign - I wanted to use a taller tree each side of the pillars but the drive is on a slope and it might look a bit lopsided. I wonder if there is a way I could correct this by digging out and leveling under each pot or would this look weird? @amanda hunter - it's a great tip looking at local house styles! Mine is quite modern (1996) and is situation in a lovely village with quite a lot of older style houses with authentic wood doors etc. sadly this is a composite door and I added this as the wood door which was on the house was in a terrible state, so my options are limited to having it sprayed a suitable color. So far I think I will: 1) add flagstone path 2) lower globe buxus type pots in front of each pillar 3) paint door (still wanted red) 4) use some of the plants recommended here and go to my local garden centre. The porch also has built in flower beds flanking the steps so once flowers are in there it will look good. The darkness of the north facing house sheltered by a large oak tree is an issue for me, the house looks great but looks dark and gloomy, hence I don't want to have a door that looks too dark and dull, unless it was black. The company who will be spraying the door can do all farrow and ball colors, so I am going to check out some more heritage colors as per Laura and other suggestions. I'm going to get some blue and red samples this week!!

Front: Renew the windows to the main house. Put in some metal frame units. Change the colour. Try Velfac. They do a unit which is timber on the inside. Break up the garage wall with some planting/ shrubs. Possibly more planting around the border of the garden. The flat roof part of the house isn't great - may be add a pitch... Rear: New windows to the main house. I agree extension right across or 2 new extensions that match with a courtyard between with new doors from house. Again, break the elevation/site lines with some additional planting. Pitched roof over the flat roof would definately help here.

Good morning Elizabeth,

In agreement with the comments above in terms of a replacement entrance door and planted screening.

The render and the tile hanging look like they could do with some TLC. You won't need any planning permission to maintain existing materials or replace them with the exact same material.
