Garden overhaul - help with costing?

We are looking to do a garden overhaul and we have no idea how much things costs. I’m wondering if you can help me with costing on the following:

1. Remove and replace Side fences with a basic paling fence, at least 120cm tall

2. Remove all concrete paths, patio, fences (exception : we want to leave the concrete path that runs alongside the house from the front driveway for access to bins)

3. Remove Shed, plants and pavers at side of property

4. Remove and replace brown front fence (see last 3 pics) with a basic paling fence, at least 180cm and preferably sitting on top, or just behind the rock wall, and extending around to the side of the driveway

5. Install artificial grass to the whole area.

6. Install a 3 x 3 m area of patio/paving outside the living area, from which the first picture was taken

Thanks for any advice on costing! Also who do I need to do this work?

I would have thought £5000-7000 would cover all of the above.

Hmmmm how long is a piece of string? Can I suggest you get 2 or 3 landscaping companies in to quote? Go by recommendation if possible or have a look at the professionals page on Houzz. It cost me £3000 to remove old paving in my back garden, supply and lay new Indian sandstone paving and change a couple of fence panels.

If the patio area is currently a water trap you need to put drainage in whatever else you do. You also need to think about what is going to be required for the extension and what goes around it. There is very little point spending money now only to abandon what you do and have to spend entirely anew. The manhole near to the downpipe is an obvious target for a ground drainage pipe. Is that manhole going to move next year? If so, run the pipe to where it is going and bend it from there to where it is now, or use an elbow and an extra bit of pipe. At the other end you could simply have holes in the pipe. Or you could construct a French drain as a more permanent solution, which would cost not very much more at all. Is the base for the extension going to be raised so the floors are level? Or sunk to where the land level is outside the kitchen? If lowered, ensure your new drainage pipe will not be above the surface when that happens. If the whole ground area is to be lowered, say with steps to the current entrance, make you new drainage system deeper to accommodate your plan. As you are in Somerset and with only the seasons to add shadow, put the patio where you want it. Unless you really feel like sitting outside in winter. As a temporary covering, gravel, bark chip or woodchip would fit the bill for just a year. But as the current patio is raised so you can step straight out of your door, why remove it? Just take it up for long enough to get the drainage in then put it back. You have the materials in place and there will be less small bits to be trodden into the house. Wait for the extension and do a complete job of it then.

Are you sure you def want to level up the end of the garden? I think it could feel quite exposed there as your fences are lower at that end. How about digging into the slop to terrace it instead? I think in terms of budget, turfing and decking would prob use a good proportion of the amount you've mentioned. A cabin would be lovely but would def require more budget to get something decent.

Looks like a project! You need to schedule your work and a few starting points are: Sketch out a layout Trim back hedges & replace rotting fences Remove concrete under existing shed (some could be used as hardcore under new shed depending on design) Put in base for new shed & build other landscaping Plant up beds Put in grass (artificial is a good suggestion with all those trees!) The layout will need to introduce movement, hide some areas of the garden, and put planting in the corners to blur the boundaries. Think about setting it on 45 degrees? Use evergreens such as Choisya and Osmanthus to hide areas, and possibly an evergreen Clematis armandii trained along neighbour's extension - depending on light levels. Try the sunken fire pit with raised seating made from sleepers. When planning the news, leave an 80cm wide path around the sides and back - kids love playing chase and hide and seek along these, and they also help make maintenance easier. Good luck!

Rather strange that the garage doors face into the garden, so you would have to drive over the garden to get to them! I have a garage at the end of my garden but the garage door is facing out the back where there is a road. I think, eventually you could update the garages by removing the old doors, bricking up the wide doorways and just put in normal doors, get a new roof and then turn it into a gym, office or whatever you like. But this will come at a cost and it may well be cheaper to knock it all down and put up a shed, or a cabin. Our electric garage door cost just under £1500, just to give you a guide price. This is my garden/garage - a narrower but similar style. It is also surprising how much creating a garden can cost. You could take up the paving and create a sitting area nearer the house, then grass the rest until you decide on your final design?

Personally I thought the £5/7k mentioned above was optimistic and would have estimated £10k.
Most landscapers who show patio laying on their website will be able to replaces fences. Laying artificial turf needs the correct groundwork prep so try to find someone who has done that before.

thx Jonathon. the grass option was £8.5k and artificial grass £9.5k. a large chunk of the cost is in levelling out the grass as it's raised from the shed area to the front of the garden. we might scrap the artificial grass option. we're in the 'is it worth it ' questioning phase now..
