I was wondering if anyone could comment on type of flooring, color and application? Thank you.

This is a concrete slab that was polished and stain in this color is solid and it also has radiant heating , I don't have the exact product but I can find out my Client I know had them refinished recently

sounds lovely, but I am using my old Ercol dining furniture in the dining end of the kitchen which is in a med oak. I am a little scared of doing an overkill on wood.

Light or dark wooden flooring?

I voted for the dark wood flooring but I also love the mid brown. In the end, it also depends a bit on the light you get in the room. I grew up in an old timbered house with small windows and therefore not a lot of light. Meaning, I would use mid brown wood for this house, while in my current, very modern and light flooded apartment, I prefer the dark brown wood flooring :)

That photo does look good, the two don't clash at all. I can't afford real wood flooring. I will either be having new laminate or engineered wood flooring, neither of which are something I would want in a kitchen. I also don't feel comfortable having something I feel would be more difficult to clean than tiles. It's a kitchen diner which opens onto our unusually wet and muddy garden. I have two children who create lots of mess. Just yesterday my eldest spilled some sort of hideous red goo all over the cream carpet upstairs! My other option is some sort of blue geometric patterned tiled floor. I haven't been able to find many affordable options so would probably only be able to do half of the room, depending on the way it is designed. Do any more affordable options exist? I found the optiks tiles at topps tiles which are just under £70 a square metre, so still too expensive for me. They are also quite a light blue and I'd prefer something darker. Are there any other options around?

What kind of flooring are you hoping to get installed? The builders who recommend to screed over the quarry tiles, what kind of flooring do they recommend putting on top of the concrete? Is that going to make the floor less cold? Without a DPC, isn't there going to be a risk of efflorescence? You'll still have to deal with vapour coming up through the floor, so you'll be limited in the kind of flooring you can use. I doubt you could put vinyl flooring without a vapour barrier, but I'm not sure. I'm not an expert, but (assuming your floor is original) unless you insulate the floor, it will continue to be cold. And to insulate the floor, you will have to dig it out unless you have enough head room to raise it. You could potentially install a wooden floor so it doesn't feel as cold, but it would need breathing room underneath to avoid damage from the ground moisture. You could also add vapour-permeable insulation underneath. As for DPC causing damp walls, what do the builders recommending it say about that? My understanding is that you could put a drainage system on the inside of the house, under the slab, (example: https://hammerandhand.com/best-practices/manual/7-basements/7-4-basement-retrofit/). It might still be a good idea to insulate the floor to avoid condensation issues. I would personally consider a proper DPC to decrease the humidity inside the house, especially in a humid climate, but it's an expensive intervention. As water turns into vapour, it uses up energy (heat) and cools down the air. Without a DPC, the more you heat your place, the more water from the ground turns into vapour and gets into your house, so it's not very energy efficient.
