Should I paint my ugly stone fireplace?

I live in a flat in a converted Victorian house. I have some period features but I also have this beauty from when the house was converted in the 70’s. It sits in a bedroom and will never be used as a fireplace, ideally I would rip the whole thing out and replace it with a reclaimed cast iron Victorian fire. However I am short on cash and time so looking for some quick fix ideas and inspiration please. Will it look ok just painted white?
