How should I accessorise my fireplace?

Hi I have revamped my 1970s fireplace but I'm struggling to finish off the look. I was thinking maybe a mirror but would love anyone's recommendations. Here are the before and after pictures

Hi Helen,

You’ve done a great job with the renovation - it looks really
good!

I suggest adding a long shelf to your newly painted
fireplace, making a feature of the wall and creating the illusion of a modern
mantel.

To dress the shelf, add a simple mirror such as this
beautiful Heart of House Mirror with golden detailing. Try hanging the mirror
so it appears to rest on the shelf to create a stylish, relaxed feel within
your living room.

It's very imposing. Really does stand out. I'd have ripped it out and opt for something smaller and modern.

Laura Ashley sells a round mirror a bit like the one in your photo which would look good. I think it may look better if you moved the clock to a different wall, otherwise it might look like you are trying to match the clock on the second chimney breast. Have other art work on the walls would help detract from wonky levels too. The room looks lovely btw!

Hi Harriet. I think it's fine to paint this door in any lighter colour you like. For your interior doors and cupboards though you could consider painting them in the wall colour, it often works for smaller rooms with more than one door so they blend into the walls and it looks less busy and therefore more spacious

The one in the last bedroom is really nice. However, the other two don't have great facades. I'd remove the stonework and change them for something more attractive. I'd keep the actual fireplaces though, especially in the living areas. For instance - the lounge one could have the top row of stone removed to make it a nicer shape. You could then use 'stone spray' available in lots of DIY stores to give the existing stone a makeover. I'm guessing however, that the dining area and lounge have been knocked through and are one room. Therefore, making both fireplaces identical would be better. The one in the dining room is not original and the stone hearth is broken and a little in the way. Removing all of it would be preferable. Maybe you could replace both with whole fireplaces like these:- Flames.co.uk Finish stripping the floors, add slightly longer curtains as they don't cover the sills. Put a mirror above the fireplace, add a rug?

It is really ugly. if you really don't intend to use it, I suggest to paint it an off white colour so it blends in as much as possible. When you get a few bob, replace it altogether.

Unfortunately our budget won't stretch to a replacement at the moment hence the paint job. Thanks Sarah-jane for your ideas I'm going mirror shopping tomorrow !
