what is the best type of flooring for the lounge and kitchen?

I have terracotta tiles right through from the passage to the kitchen and dining in my home. I would like to change it to something more modern, versatile and easy to upkeep.

@fwagner93 This is 80mm wide select grade Bluegum flooring secret nailed.

It will come back to the best colour that suits the rest of the house.

@queenofsuccess - I'm getting a better picture now, so we are looking for something that would keep the design in the contemporary brackets, but with a good dollop of homely warmth right? How about if you had the cream tiles around the kitchen area only, so from the white cabinets to the island, then from the brown ladder units to the island too and around it, so that the stools are on tiles. Sort of like a pavement, that would clearly separate the clean kitchen area from a nice hardwood floor in the rest of the room? In this case I would choose the colour of the wooden floor to contrast with white kitchen and cream tiles, but also to work with the walnut ladder units. I know you said your husband would like something light and I can totally understand him there. Light colours would definitely make the room brighter. When it comes to warmth I would suggest a nice oak panel, something along the lines of this: It is quite a challenge to make your idea work flawlessly. We have white kitchen units with near white worktops, part of the floor in cream tiles, walnut kitchen units and you want a fairly light hardwood floor to bring warmth into the room. I think that the only way to solve it well, would be if you could provide as much information on the final decor you want to achieve, the size of the room, natural light sources (i.e. windows, doors etc.), so we can try to find a best fit that will blend in with everything and work for you. Wooden floors would look great - if the rooms are long and narrow lay the planks horizontally as this will make the rooms appear wider - if they are short and wide lay them vertically to make them appear longer - you could compromiise by laying wood look tiles in the kitchen but wood throughout will look more streamlined - we have wood on our open plan Floors and a massive rug in the living room - easy to change a rug as you change colour schemes - not so with fitted carpets! Thank you all for your comments. Very much appreciated. My wife is ruling out wood because she doesn't like the look of wood in kitchens and because we have solid wood flooring in the rest of the downstairs area and she thinks it will clash. Picture below of where out kitchen meets the hallway. Also we bought some more of those tiles yesterday to get more of a feel of what it'll look like. It does look pretty good but it does worry us about what type of table and appliance colours we will be able to get and really making it all look a bit drab perhaps? We are leaning towards sticking with relaying the same times the house already has as we have been unable to find any better looking light grey tiles. We do really like them.

Porcelain or ceramic tiles are very cold if you don’t have under floor heating, but vinyl is much warmer. I think to create more visual warmth in the kitchen you could go for an LVT in a warm wood effect. One flooring throughout will always make an area seem more spacious. Here’s some ideas
