For a quick, easy and cheap facelift you'll be amazed how far a clean-up alone will go. Jet wash the wall and the driveway setts. Put a lick of paint on the ironwork, black would definitely be good. Brush in fresh kiln-dried sand between the setts. Prune back those sad looking shrubs before they get back into growth, which will be any time now. Don't cut back those firs, they will not grow back and are likely to just die. If you do anything at all with them, get rid and plant something which grows more happily in this country. It's a low definition photo so I can't see the state of the lawn or whether the wall needs re-pointing. Look yourself and treat accordingly. That alone will lift the place sufficiently to give you breathing space. Then you can think through what budget you have left and which of the many ideas available you prefer and can prioritise accordingly. On the other hand, whatever you do will not look good while all that looks scruffy and unloved.

There should be no such thing as waste. Everything is part of a cycle, which should not be broken. And we ARE part of the planet - which gives us our life and can easily take our life away! Even if you have children, it is possible to minimise the need to recycle. Think about value, quality and ethics rather than quantity. Start by not buying things that are not required to keep you alive and healthy; especially things that are not 'life-supporting' or that alienate you from the natural world. Think carefully and plan; - don't be feather - blown along by the mindless wind of the western world... Such a policy saves you money, or will help reduce your need to work (or exploit the planet by being part of this dangerous, unsustainable game called 'economic growth, no matter the cost'). Of course, being a vegan or vegetarian will really help, as will preparing and eating real food - rather than buying expensive 'rubbish' food from supermarkets or take-aways. You will have better nutrition, and it will save you time and money! Of course the by-products of the food you have eaten are an essential part of the ecological cycle and should not be incinerated or flushed away; they should be aerobically composted and returned to recreate soil fertility. If you can, try growing your own food organically. Then enjoy the extra taste, vitamin and mineral content! Paper or cardboard can be composted, as can vegetable trimmings. We cannot and should not attempt to evade the responsibility we all have to close the cycle. I have a neighbour (the same age as me) who cannot fit her fortnightly rubbish into her weelie-bin, yet I need not put out my bin for a whole year (and then it mainly contains types of plastic packaging that cannot be taken to the recycling centre). If you set out to live lightly on the planet by using recycled items or by trying to buy only good quality essential items (and mend them when they go wrong), there is less need to discard and waste the energy and resources invested in our purchases. As far as clothing (assuming you cannot make your own) is concerned, buying good quality, then not getting it needlessly dirty (by wearing an apron or overall) and of course not washing your clothes to death - are sensible policies which save water, energy and waste. Drink water, rather than be ripped off by buying rubbish in a can or bottle. Plain water is much better for your internal organs and keeping you healthy than complicated concoctions. Maybe filter the water and/or boil off the chlorine using your kettle first. If you want to avoid the hormones/antibiotics etc in tap water, then find an uncontaminated source. Most of the tap water we pay for is wasted - (it just ends up down the drain having not even done anything useful) - because we do not have spray nozzles or sensor taps. In our 1970's autonomous dwelling I fitted foot controls (used on trains) to the taps and you only pressed when you needed a flow. We also used mist-spray nozzles. And you do not need to wet your toothbrush as you have saliva in your mouth, - just rinse it after use! A well-designed waterless toilet (sadly its not easy to find out how to build one, as all the books give completely rubbish information) will cut your toilet water use to zero, other than for washing your hands. Collect water from your roof and use it in the garden and for other tasks, (we filtered it and used it for drinking in our 1970's house - tests by the water authority showed it was as clean as well water). By moving gradually in such a direction, we can change the world towards what is valuable for a sustainable life on this very special, tiny jewel of a planet. Even small steps are positive and valuable.

Hi ED, Thanks! Yep the eye of faith is crucial with winter garden makeovers! It'll be loads more plant dominated in a year or two. There's already a pump in the pond, which works as a standalone fountain, but can be adapted to power a cascade on the wall behind. We're having all sorts of whacky ideas like building a 'marble run' style sculpture incorporating all our favourite things, (archaeology, sci fi etc) or a commissioned metal sculpture that looks like a steel version of Virginia creeper.

Hi A kitchen fitter will be able to do this for you, Howdens may be able to advise you of one or have a look on the ikbbi website and ring round. It'll be a bit fiddly but not impossible to do and assuming that the cabinet to the right of the drawers is not an integrated appliance, if it is then its not possible as you'd need a support panel for the worktop and you don't have the room. I'd suggest an integrated dishwasher but what ever you chose make sure that it can pump the waste water to about 3m away and don't get one with an anti flood device as these are supposed to be fitted vertically and you won't be able to do this, get a long 1.8-2.4m washing machine water feed hose and about 2-3m of washing machine waste hose, connectors and jubilee clips (the connectors may have a reverse thread on them and I used to use plenty of silicon and jubilee clips when i used to make extended waste hoses when i was fitting) avoid the thin flexible concertina extending hoses as these can split. All these available from a plumbers merchant or your kitchen fitter will get/have them. First remove the plinth then the drawer unit will have to come out, this should have slip brackets fixing the worktop down as it looks like wooden tops, wind the legs in and then the fiddly bit may be the unit also been bracketed to the wall so a bit of brute force may be required to remove. keep the drawer fronts for later. The kitchen fitter will then get the dishwasher ready, change the cold fill hose for the longer one (can't do this if the hose has the anti flood though, you'd have just extend it which is bit crap) and extend the waste hose and feed the hoses in the plinth space under the units, slide the dishwasher into place, pull the longer hoses round and feed them into the sink cupboard and connect them to the waste via a spigot (may need to change your waste for a twin spigot waste kit) and if you have a washing machine valve for your washing machine use a brass splitter (plastic ones can break) or he might have to fit an extra valve. For the power he might have to run an extension and plug in under the plinth if there isn't a socket in an adjoining unit. For the integrated facia you can use the 2 drawer fronts you have already, bit fiddly but can be done, check for any leaks and do a wash cycle, then refit the plinth. Easily done in a day for a half decent kitchen fitter or for a competant diy'er and not complicated, the plumbing will all run under the units so no need to disturb any other units apart from the sink unit for the connections, probably the hardest bit might be getting the power there.
