The Great Paint Debate

Hi guys, we are doing our first reno and need some style inspiration. Our formal living room is a dull magnolia atm and we can’t decide whether to paint the walls grey or blue. Any thoughts or ideas? Any help on wall art also gratefully received ❤️

Blue would look good. I would paint radiators the colour as the walls.

Just to repeat what a couple of others have said. The cabinet is in great condition and a good colour. perhaps change the knobs for a very simple small aged brass or even a dark bronze button type. Change the lamp as it is too big for the unit, the shade is pressing against the wall, (it could work well on a side table by a sofa perhaps). Exchange it for a lamp with some brass incorporated into it (very popular and in most decor stores now) and it could look lovely. the difference between painting or leaving the unit, depends on the final look you are going for. If you want a more classic feel. Don't Paint, go with the above suggestion. If you want more quirky as some of your accessories suggest, Then Paint and adorn with crazy abandon! Happy days!

I LOVE the green wall as well and I could see that carried over onto the fireplace wall. I like your idea of two sofas facing each other either side of the fire, I love symmetry in a room and it looks like with your room layout you could achieve that. . Round mirror above the fireplace like Minnie suggested, and possibly two large pieces of art (rectangular). You could maybe also consider a one sofa two chairs arrangement, something with small thin arms to maximise the seating space. Colour wise? What colour sofas are you thinking? As for the telly I would position it on the wall opposite the fire one, you could have a lovely built in section there. If that's not in the budget you could have a console table under the tv like you have now but it would need to be bigger to expand past the width of the telly. You could then dress this with some lamps either side to increase height and balance out the TV. Good luck its exciting when you start a new re model from scratch.

Before. This room had #blue #fittedwardrobes I could not move, was rather dark as north facing and needed #modernising, so I fitted a new larger pendant, added side lights and side tables, painted in a couple of diff greys and added a blue wall behind the bed, to balance the deep blue on the wardrobes. Fitting new carpets, window boxes and plants, and styling with fresh new bedding along with a pop of yellow in the central cushion, certainly brightened and freshened up this room. .

You obviously like the maximalist style of decor. I really like the bottom wallpaper but wouldn’t have such a bold print for the blinds. A plain bold colour from the blinds would be a better choice in my view. However, it’s your home and if you want that maximalist look then that’s up to you. If you look at this colourful, maximalist room, the pattern is only on some of the walls and cushions. Everything else is colourful but plain.

Just looking at the Farrow and Ball colours, Hardwick white is screaming at me. Very changeable colour in different lights but you have a lovely bright room with lots of white detailing that I think a deeper tone would work really well. Also looks lovely under artificial light. I would look at Pigeon which is quite a greyed out blue or Oval Room Blue. Both should work with the carpets and sofas and look good with wood.
