Lighting help in new kitchen & extension

Hello everyone

Looking for help or advice with my lighting in my new kitchen and extension. I will have 3 pendant lights over the island but apart from that, I have no idea what to do with other lights. Just wondering where to put spots and how many. I have 3 velux windows in the extension.

At top of the plan will be base and wall units, left hand side will be ovens and fridge, bottom of plan will be floor to ceiling cupboards.

I would do under cabinet lighting and recessed lights on a dimmer (make sure that your not working in your own shadow). You could also have in cabinet lighting.

I agree with Hugh re supervision plus by the time the extension is built your son will be nearing an age where he understands a little more. You may also want him in there to cook with you soon. I'm sure the kitchen can be designed from a safety aspect too if that's the only thing holding you back. I think the advantage of using OnePlan is that Karen can look at the whole house spatially etc and you're not tied to a particular kitchen company (I'm not on commission!). Click on her profile for reviews etc. I second Hugh's comments re karndean too! I like the heringbone parquet! If you did want to hire an interior designer (designers tend to be qualified in planning too I think as opposed to an interior decorator although many of those could be qualified by experience) then you could find you save as much as you spend. Some of them will offer you their trade discount which if doing the whole house could add up to an awful lot. They may also make you save from any mistakes and I've made a few of those! I'd go on houzz and search for pros and look at their reviews and previous work. I think you need to meet people yourself though as it's important to have a good working relationship and make sure they understand you

Thanks for the compliment. I am not a professional but have modernised and rearranged many homes and been very successful at adding value. Everything is possible in building terms but lots of things are uneconomic. I suspect that the walls between the front bedroom and shower room and the other wall between bed 2 and the kitchen are holding up walls in the flat above. You can knock doorways in them but removing them altogether is more expensive. You should also bear in mind that as a resident you are likely not the freeholder (which means you are responsible for the whole building) but a part owner of the freehold meaning that you still need permission to make internal alterations. Do you have much budget beyond the purchase to build and renovate?

I’d be tempted to move the feature down light near to Belfast sink a bit closer to the perimeter wall - so the lights shine above the sink - to cancel out the shadow it would cause if it were where positioned currently.

@Jon Burchfield thanks, that looks really nice! Slight issue is that we have a pitched roof on the new side infilled area. Unfortunately planning constraints mean that the height at the wall will be 2.6m falling to just 2m. I know the velux windows are recessed into the roof but if we have tall units on that side it might block out the light, how high are the units? Having a 450mm unit in that corner would be practical but I think it would look a little odd if we had 600mm units next to it. Perhaps 450mm either end with 3 600mm in the middle would look ok? @Mark Bassage @kwg kwg Thanks. Take on board the hob suggestion from everyone. Seems sensible to have it on the other side. The oven/microwave is a tricky one, if we go with the peninsula design unless we have them under the counter then the only space would be just on the left as you enter. That's practical, but we're slightly concerned this ruins the nice open feel you would get to the left as you enter. @i-architect that is something i'd considered, first impression from the company is that it would be possible but i'm not sure why. I'll check with the builders. It would make access to the under stair cupboard a little trickier but might be more practical to make the most of the kitchen space

Hi Carolina

Thanks for the link. I have under the cabinet lighting which comes with the wall units but you're right about working in your own shadow which would really annoying, something I never even considered that would be an issue.

Very important is that you should put the lights above the work areas rather than in the centre of the room otherwise you will create a shadow where you are working https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/484699978638792625/

If you want flexibility as well as good aesthetics have a look at the Levello products, Once you have installed the housing, you can put more or less whatever you want into it … pendants, spotlights, recessed downlights, anti glare etc.
