All the same grey? Walls, woodwork, doors throughout the house?

After staying in a holiday house with every room, all walls, doors, frames, skirting painted in the same colour I planned the same. I thought this was the easy option....till now when I am trying to pick a shade of grey to do just that.

Kitchen unit doors are also the Howidens mid grey.

Any thoughts or advice welcome.

I have to say I like white skirting and architrave. It gives the grey definition. I think my downstairs loo is the equivalent of F&B Pavilion Gray which is a mid grey. I had a colour match done by Johnstones as I prefer their paint and it's a lot cheaper too.

I like your idea!

All in the same colour but because of the different materials painted (and paint type) you will still get some different shades. Interesting.

Can't give you definite advice but I would think a medium to light grey might be best.

Whatever you do, keep us posted! :)

Thanks for reply. Your room looks lovely! I'm looking for a warm grey for my West facing bedroom and have tried so many different ones but none seem quite right. Think I may have to try Purbeck Stone although Farrow and Ball might be a bit expensive for me!

You certainly have the height to carry such a look but I wonder whether you would lose the definition in some of that beautiful cornice? I like ceilings painted the same colour as the walls. I considered one shade lighter (ie ammonite) to have a slight contrast. You could also paint the cornice white and the ceiling cornforth but I think that is a more traditional look. On balance my favourite would be the cornice and ceiling painted one shade lighter. What have you done in the rest of the house with the ceilings?

Big thanks tamp75. I really like your idea of RAL 9007 for garage door (standard product) and Sadolin "volcanic ash" for the window frames. Hadn't thought of that! And I think you might be right about the weathering of the "traditional" shade of Marshalls driveway products. Have been noticing this as a pass local front gardens. Anyone have any ideas for a warm/soft white shade for the exterior wall? A mum at school suggested RAL 9010 - she said that was the advice her sister (an architect) had given her on her house (she was doing the interiors). Any views?

@rinq natural wood would have been nice if we had wood windows but unfortunately they are all white pvc, doh! I like the white with the dark navy theme though and I can add in black and some greenery and other colours into the room in decor to liven it up a bit. *****I just have to choose a carpet colour now!! The griege I was going for doesnt work with the navy - makes it feel a bit drab. Wasn’t going to go with silver grey but now the walls are blue, do you think this is the best colour??

I find that either the same colour can work or a darker if the grey is light. For example, it can look really sophisticated to do a tone darker on woodwork if using a pale colour such as Skimming Stone wall and Elephant's Breath woodwork etc but if you are doing a pale grey everywhere including woodwork it can also work as it just reads as a 'white' room if that make sense. I have never used white woodwork paint ever apart from in my studio, I'm not sure why, it just doesn't work for me.

Found a picture on another post which has given me more confidence. Planning this refurb I was going to buy all new doors but decided painting them (anything but white!)

Would be a good alternative. Think I am going to have to be brave and see it through.

Though if course one shade of grey is going to look different in different rooms and lights. Will this be an issue?

HI LOUISA- I RECENTLY FACED A SIMILAR DILEMMA REGARDING GREYS AND CONTINUITY THROUGH THE HOUSE. I GOT LOTS OF TESTER POTS, SPENT A LOT, ALMOST GAVE UP THEN WHAM, I WAS IN A WILKO STORE AND SAW THEY SOLD PAINT, SO I GOT SOME TESTER POTS, WENT HOME AND TRIED THEM OUT, FELL IN LOVE WITH A COLOUR CALLED BIRCH WHITE-WILKO BEST SUPERIOR FLAT MATT EMULSION,ITS CHALKY LIKE FARROW AND BALL, SHOCKED AT THE QUALITY AND PRICE AT £15 FOR 2.5L ITS LIKE A SILVERY DOVE GREY, ITS VERY ETHEREAL, WHOLE FAMILY LOVES IT, HUSBAND IS VERY PLEASED AS I USUALLY DECORATE WITH FARROW AND BALL OR FIRED EARTH. I HAVE SEEN A PAINT FOR THE WOODWORK CALLED FRENCH GREY PALE BY LITTLE GREEN WHICH IS A GOOD MATCH. I DO GO ON A BIT, BUT MY POINT IS SHOP AROUND TILL YOUR REALLY 110% HAPPY.

Hi Louisa Lu, it could be a big issue. If your chosen paint is very 'greyed' then this will look completely different in rooms with different aspects. North rooms give a blue light, East a green light an so on. Then there is how much light a room gets, not just the colour. Then there is the flooring, a cool grey room will look more balanced with a warm wood floor etc. There's a lot to think about.

I applied the same principal in my house, walls, skirting, doors and walls are painted the same colour. It has a calm and sophisticated look. I did however vary the colours in each room slightly, selecting colours next to each other on the paint chart. My personal favourites are ammonite, cornforth white and purbeck stone by F&B. I think it is hard to advise, you would need to buy some tester pots and paint A4 sheets and move them around the rooms. Also consider the ceilings. I painted my wevet, a crisp white, but I wish I’d painted them a slightly lighter shade than the wall.

I agree that the grey will look different in certain rooms.

We have a fair bit of grey but have had to tweak the shades to fit the light.

For example polished pebble dulux looked baby blue in our hallway and had to be repainted with pebble shore.

My fav grey paints by dulux are:

Polished pebble - blue undertone
Pebble shore - brown undertone
Dusted moss 2 - green undertone
Chic shadow - darker more industrial grey, blue ish undertone

I think we've settled on Inox, by Little Greene. Haven't the time to check different shades in different rooms. Doesn't this change by time of day too? House is south east facing.

If the grey looks a different shade I am sure we will live with it. We are redoing the whole house including new flooring so hopefully it will all be ok. The different shades created might be quite interesting.

I have painted on paper next to the kitchen units and this is fine.

Good choice, that’s a lovely shade of grey. I think you’re right it will add interest according to the different light in each room. I have the same paint in a north facing room and a south facing room but they look quite different but at the same time harmonious when seen together from the hallway.
