Where to cut the picture rail after opening up a wall.
Comments (10)Hello Rachel, I would leave the arch plain as is. One fantastic way of dealing with dado and picture rails and even skirting is simply to paint it! By that I mean leave the beading off altogether and paint the separations. This was common in the servants quarters where details were left to a minimum but actually I love this look !! It not only suggests a period aesthetic but has a really modern and contemporary feel. The same can be done with skirting. With the floor have a simple bead around the edge of the floor to finish. Mask the height and paint a line. Same again to picture rail height etc etc... I would add architrave to doors only and then try my suggestions. If you really want to add detail to the skirting you can decide how high, then add beading along the top and several sections (depending on height overall of room) or base only if height minimal and skirting minimal. Then paint the lot the colour of your choosing. :))...See MoreTile the entire floor or only up to behind the plinths?
Comments (17)My builder boarded the whole floor with floor grade chipboard and then tiled on top. It’s done the trick. I’m not sure insulating boarding is rigid enough to prevent cracking? Remember my previous tiler said paving over boards is okay with a grid and flexible grout but he was wrong! May I suggest, if you want to of course, you start a new advice question asking if tiling over insulation tiles is okay? There are several people on here with the right skills to advise you more than I can. Sorry to cause you more hassle but better to get the right info before it’s too late....See MoreHorizontal or diagonal placing of tile in Shower
Comments (29)You are very welcome Mairead, I recommend thinking about your taste, lifestyle and the rest of your home. To avoid the larger tiles looking very clinical the coverage can be kept down.Colour, lighting and more can also help. Large tiles like this are very popular. Many say that they make the room feel larger however that is not always the case if only one or one and a half tiles fit within a space. On the other hand, the amount of grout that requires cleaning will be reduced. I concur mostly with your original idea of utilising left over timber finish tiles, timber can be relaxing and timeless and tends to hide footprints also. This can also ensure that the rooms are connected through the same material palette. Our gut instinct is best along with expert opinions. Comments (30)@Nicola M (Nicola) well we went to a new local tile shop the other day and she persuaded me to stick with the giant tiles, but still tiling them as brickwork effect. I saw an amazing concrete one that was a nice colour, wasn't patchy but was out of our budget (£40sqm)!! eek. My OH just said to order them as he knows how stressed I have been trying to find something I like, LOL. There were some other lovely ones but in the wrong shape ie 600's which I don't like on the wall personally. I haven't ordered them yet but they are typically special order so I my tiler is coming to measure today so I can be sure to have enough. Hence my questions about where to tile to as we are trying to save money, haha. I was going to do the floor as well so it all runs through but I think it will need some pattern/oomph in the room with all grey tiles. These are the ones in the Gris colour. They have lovely veining running through them which I like. https://www.geotiles.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/CATALOGO-CARNABY-Baja.pdf...See Moreminnie101
