Cream Kitchen Help

Hi,

I'm in a rental property and I have kitchen that I would like to update.

I want to make a feature of the fireplace, lighten the room and have a few modern copper accents.

But I cannot figure out the colour for the walls.

As it is a rental I cannot therefore change anything such as the cabinets/worktops/floors.

We're in our mid 20s and want a sociable, quirky yet rustic kitchen.

Any ideas?

Also I apologise for the mess of the room.

Hi Stef,

I think the flowery wallpaper does close the room in quite a bit.

This would definitely benefit from a coat of emulsion....Ivory ones would be ideal.

Also consider some nice frames & artwork to make the room more personal to you.

Is the table & chairs yours or part of the rental?

If you can change this to a lighter finish it would really help with the overall look.

If you're allowed to paint over the wallpaper it would go a long way to updating the room and offering a blank canvas for introducing the style you like through accessories such as art prints, etc. I would probably paint it a neutral off white or greige to start with and work in the look you like from there. Also, you could consider painting the table and chairs or adding an oilcloth.

Some fireplace ideas... I like the one with the different size vases and pots. You could introduce the copper accents here.

I would say black and white is a crisper combination . White and a lighter top is very popular too, has overtaken the black recently !! Cream, IMO, is better with warm colour tops, Ask them to position the handle of the sink base like the DW next to it ie horizontal and central !! And to add a small infill next to the oven housing and the end of the drawers by the sink to ensure the drawers /oven open more easily as they are tight against the walls. Unless a tv is an absolute must - I'd loose it from that position between the windows as it looks odd - don't most people watch TV on their tablets nowadays anyway ?!

Depending on the make of kitchen you choose, there may be a number of "white" available, ranging from a crystal "bright" white to the more yellowy end of white. It's always a good idea to try and take any door samples outside to view in natural light as studio/showroom lighting may alter the tone somewhat.

Putting white or light grey on a kitchen floor is asking for martyrdom - fine if you're what Freud called a housewife psychotic; but if mopping your floor three times a day isn't your thing, go for a darker floor and get your reflected light from the vertical surfaces of the island. I would also be wary of white next to cream - call me old-fashioned, but it's one of the few combinations that simply jars. Have you considered having a bold and bright colour for the island as a counterpoint to all that tastefully restrained grey, black and cream?

I think the lighting is out on this photo, it's sage grey which you can see on the other photos on the link. try looking for a wedgewood blue, zoffany do one or try little greene bone China blue or farrow and ball Parma gray. They're not identical but similar shade to what you're looking for. Is there anywhere else you could put the fridge? I’m presuming not but it doesn’t help the space having it in the alcove. I think I’d paint the alcoves a darker colour so that the fridge doesn’t stand out as much. If you go for a pale grey in the room, be careful on the colour you choose with the cream. It would need to be more of a greige. I agree about painting the table & chairs. You could have each chair a different colour. How about a large rug under the table to cover some of the floor?

Colour for walls- I’ve just done up a property for sale and have used ‘putty white’ Valspar 500 (B&Q) lovely greens grey which would go nicely with the cream. Agree with previous conversation and paint alcove a darker shade of fridge stays.

I don't think the wallpaper is bad and actually it ties the cream and gray/charcoal colors together. However it does limit your artwork choices. That said, if you do paint you might have hard time as you have a warm brown tone splashback and the floor to contend with. I'd leave the walls alone and after a good declutter I'd look at a new dining set. If budget is an issue you could paint what you have although it will lean more country in style. I'd also consider some sort of floating shelves above what looks like the bar area (radiator?). They have shelves that have the underside for stemware which might be useful. I'd also put a mirror above the fireplace and tilt it slightly upward so it mostly reflects the ceiling. If possible I'd move the refrigerator to where the fish tank is and find a new spot for the fish.
