Comments (660)So funny! I'm planning to paint the bannister at the new house (TNH) black and am veering towards painting the treads and risers black too... I've been searching for images of black staircases on Houzz and putting them in my entrance hall ideabook. They are few and far between. In your case, I think, with your white walls, maybe the stairs white and the bannister black? (Assuming the white walls continue up the stair walls enabling the b/w contrast.) You've already put black firmly into the equation, adding some more may give more reason for the black rad cab. In my case, there is a very off-centre radiator that could so very easily have been directly opposite the front door in TNH which is rather annoying as it stuffs up the focal point. We are leaving here with every radiator covered with a cabinet - and going to TNH that has loads of radiators ...but no cabinets! Yes, the work ahead is daunting - especially since the area of Ireland we're going to is very basic and not full of DIY resources, etc. I keep thinking I'll paint TNH white - to make things simpler(!) But try as I may colour keeps wandering through my mind! Lovely to be in touch again!...See MoreNeed help for my son's room!
Comments (8)Good morning Adam, I had my childhood bedroom redecorated when I was 15 as well and my mum certainly found it a challenge to choose a colour scheme! We worked on it as a joint project, of which I still have fond memories of sitting down with her to choose new colours and objects to refresh the design of the room. For me this was ideal as not only did it mean that I got to work on a project with my mum, we were also able to bounce ideas of each other to come up with a great new room. As jbruner90 said it would be wonderful to ask your son what he likes in terms of colours. If you are indeed planning it as a surprise I have a couple of suggestions for what you could do. In my case I went from having a forest green themed room to a terracotta one and I loved the change to a more fresh, neutral colour. Mushroom is also a good option as this is very versatile when it comes to placing decorative objects and changing bedding or curtains. I have attached pictures of both these colours so you can see what you think. It is also worth looking at the colour scheme your son has when it comes to his clothing - this will give you an idea of what he would like in a room. You can then start to think about his music and film tastes to further gage the tone of decoration scheme he would like. I hope this helps - do ask me for any more help you need. Comments (31)Ohh the picture... yeah a traditionalist for one so young. Seems he like cosy and to be hugged. These days anything goes, mix and match so a modern trad. Re: cool lights you can get varying tonal ranges, so maybe dimmable LED lights, so he has the choice. You can mix, match and even from cool to warm and with warm to cool LEDs. Or placing cooler ones nearer the dark areas and warmer to the light areas. And panels are great, MDF, cut to size and glue them on. And a mantle/shelf below the TV's to get that look in the main living area and the bedrooms. Rail and Dado rails around the room, to cut costs only on the walls you can see. Then you can hang pictures from them. As the wardrobes are wood it will be fine. It all seems like alot but if you have a scap bank in your area you can get paints, wall paper and charity shops sell furniture not forgetting the auction websites. Some charities are on the auction sites too. And I just remembered, soldiers do get discounts in a lot of places, and as there is not a lot of things we get free these days... As the room is dark, Sonia's lighter greys, blue rather than the darker shades, it will appear to be darker anyway as the basement flat is dark, as the colour will change throughout the day. Please post a picture when you have completed. It is sounding so exciting....See MoreSmall bedroom for 15 yr old son, blank canvas
