Help! Freshen the hallway!

Expanded the house in 2014. Since then, the two slots on each side of the front door have been cluttering the hallway. I need inspiration on how to turn these two into something original and cool. Please help me. The three photos shows left and right side of the room and the entrance door.

Comments (4)Ohh ick! My bathroom in the French countryside looked like this when I first moved in (the Swiss taste must have travelled across the border...) Those tile tattoos are worth a punt to cover up the weird ones. notonthehighstreet.com has a big range and they say they are bathroom tested. While you wait to rip it out, I would just paint the ceilings, walls and cabinetry a combo of white and cream (a tone that matches all those tiles). The blue floor tiles might then ping and look pretty good. Lush towels and a good shower curtain (you can get two layered ones that are nice waffleweave on the outside) will help a lot. And you could take the doors off the tall cabinets either side of the sink and have folded towels, attractive decorative bits, and baskets to store the more practical stuff you need in a bathroom. As for those saloon doors....actually, the more I look at them, the funnier they are and I would keep them for a while just for a laugh. Have you ever considered a real interesting eye catching piece of art work to really brighten up an area, I think a select piece of art would really make the space stand out, add interest, colour, texture and add a great talking point to the room.... Comments (14)I agree with the radiator cover idea and I would put a large, very wide, rectangular mirror above it instead of the photographs. I think this would do a much better job of expanding space and creating light than the mirror at the end of the hall (although there's no reason you can't have both). Depending on how it looks with the large mirror I might also remove the thing hanging to the left of the door. In the space in the second photograph I would either remove that photograph in between the door and cabinet on the left or I'd have it in a white frame if you'd really like something there. In the third photograph I like the idea of a collage of frames leading up the stairs, but I find these frames a bit too chunky and rustic looking in that space. I think some white-framed or black-framed photographs would look better like in the above post. There the frames are simple but the photographs themselves inject colour which is carefully chosen and the end result is crisp and fresh and looks fabulous. Comments (19)my entrance hall is way smaller than yours, with similar stairs, white banister and natural oak console and mirror. For years on end each time we've redecorated it has been where we 've experimented with really bold colour choices for walls and carpets, some arguably less successful than others. Last year was the first time we tried yellow - none of us really likes the colour but we were running out of ideas. We used Dulux's Sunny Day throughout, freshened banister and skirting with really bright white and picked a bold striped carpet for the stairs. It's been the best combination so far, and has looked even larger and brighter after we incorporated some small golden accessories on the wall and console. I cannot reccomend it strongly enough. Funniest thing is whoever visits and praises it always starts with 'I don't really like yellow but.... this yellow looks amazing or this yellow is sort of different ... Do buy a tester and give it a try. Use natural materials where you can and add a little gold here and there. Our hall has never looked so large, bright, warm and welcoming, and it doesn't look like we'll be experimenting again soon.
