Fireplace ideas please! (non active)

Hi everyone. We have a non active fireplace, I’d love a log burner but this isn’t our forever house so I’m holding off. I like the surround (I painted it) and don’t think I’m up for as big a job as retailing the heavy stone but the inside (hearth?) is a scruffy unfinished rough stone/plaster.) I hate the metal edging too. How could I brighten, whilst keeping it open rather than blocking off? Thanks!
