I would like the wall over the base units 4.5m as a feature.

I was thinking about a feature such as a large wavy line splashback from one side to the other and put LED lights behind it. Part of the wavy line would be over the hob. I dont know what material to use that would be safe and not glass as I think this would be expensive. We are early stages of build and wondered if plasterboard would be ok but it might not be adequate fireproof for over the hob. I would really appreciate some ideas. Many thanks

I’m not quite sure what you mean, but there are tiles you can buy which have a textured wavy line finish. Popular in bathrooms. Found these images - are this what you mean?

I’ve seen tiles done in a wavy line as a splashback. Glass would probably be one of the best options but I’m not sure what the limit is on length all in one piece.

Bushboard have just introduced their new splashback range called Vista. There are some stunning options on there. Google it. They are not wavy top edge though only straight but the choices are outstanding. They’re available in MDF finish and acrylic.

Thank you guys for suggestions - I like the idea of coloured blinds in the windows Pat Oliver designs - trouble is, we are quite close to the road hence why we chose in the end the wooden Venetian blinds for privacy - although with the wall colour they make everything look orange (the colour on walls is "hot sand" by homebase but is more orangy than I had hoped :-( Its very hard to know what colour to paint the room with the biscuit carpet, and natural wood...I can't really change too much as we don't have a budget. I was hoping to get the look and definition I wanted by paint/paper...but might speak to my hubby to see if we could get some more shelving. Minnie - yes good idea about putting back a little of the wall - I was thinking the same myself - although there is only one door to the room and it is smack bang in the middle on opposite wall which makes things more complicated. :-( I imagine it would be expensive though as you say. I have been trying to find pics of rooms with 2 chimney breasts myself so if you do find some, please can you post them for me as I would love to see them. Thank you both again for your comments xx

Yes like most people have said would agree with the painting option. Choose a nice light colour and as already mentioned updating the door handles could give it a whole new modern look. At the end of the day the worst that could happen is that you don't like it and then you can get rid of it but at least you have tried to give it a new lease of life! I can see you have some nice glassware stored in there at the moment so if you are planning to keep this in there why not think about adding some cabinet lighting to make the most of this and have it as a feature in your room as there are a number of cabinet lights you can look at to achieve this effect? Have you got large testers on all walls? I'd see how they change in the different lights. Cornforth can be a little chilly although it's a lovely grey. If these don't work have a look at shaded white. The colour online is nothing like the colour chart if you happen to have one!

You like the idea of a feature wall, so take the advise from those who listened to you and replied with feature wall ideas, there are some really nice and a bit different wood effect wall papers, that would look good above and then just extended about 24" either side of your fire place, also the mirror could be just a little higher, the family photos you have would be better placed above the unit that your lamp is on, also pulled away from the corner about 3ft, your other wall art would look great placed above your sofa, but not the 2 flower one's, maybe try placing them one above the other on a narrow wall, and have your foot stall/pouffe underneath with a couple of cushions, almost creating a reading nook, good luck with what ever you choose to do

You could also consider backlighting a pale stone or a manufactured product like Corian. I saw Corian in a white Onyx finish with backlighting and it was amazing.
If you do an image search of backlit granite you get lots of pictures

If you are able to, consider building the units out a bout 12cm from the wall. This will leave a gap for a raised false wall to be built , a shelf running all the way along is really useful and the slight gap really minimises splashes from cooking. I used rugged craggy tiles and there are still clean even without an extractor yet.
