Comments (19)I would always rather invest in stunning furniture than spend money on more permanent changes. In my experience you can make any space look great with the right furniture and decor. Rather than spend money on something structural I would work with the space you have with furniture that works better than the heavy farmhouse style. The nicest furniture in the room is the sideboard so I would build on that. I'd look at something like Gubi Beetle dining chairs to bring in an organic streak. Not cheap but cheaper than building in storage (the next best option) or enlarging the window which won't make much difference - and you can take them with you if you move! You could look at Made.com for a cheaper but complementary table. Then a decent lampshade - perhaps Tom Dixon Etch - a side lamp on the sideboard and lots of plants and pots to empathise the organic, cosy nature of the room. Finish with some pictures in the wall and you have a lovely, cosy, earthy room that feels like being down Alice's rabbit hole rather than under the stairs. Good luck....See MoreWhat flooring for hallway with this carpet on stairs?
Comments (16)Carrie - thank you so much for that comment. I really appreciate you resting out the temperature of your own floor for me! And for getting the noise thing, hate anything that is going to cause a racket! But I think between you and the other Houzzers on this discussion, I have had some myths busted about tiled floors. Only my own myths though I think! Thank you for the tips about the underneath of the floor too. That will really help. Thanks, I love the hallway and have been living with it as a mess for so long, it will be so nice to finally decorate it - I will try to dig out a before picture as have now had it plastered and rewired and mist coat of paint has gone on. Lots of woodwork to do now, door trims and skirting to go on and bannister to sand, then the tonne of final paint and can get to flooring after that. But we’ll get there! Thank you all so much for your kind help!...See MoreAltrrnative to carpet on stairs Alternative to carpet on stairs

Comments (25)Sorry Tani, I probably wasn’t clear. So if we end up selling and don’t like the painted stairs, I can have a runner made in the carpet we’ll be using upstairs ( there will be remnants and I wouldn’t put a runner on the landing part as it’s a bit of a trip hazard which isn’t ideal on a galleried landing). However if we stay i can add at a later stage the expensive runner we want. obviously I’d rather just pay to paint them though not knowing whether we’ll need to move or not Atm!...See MoreUser
