What type of wood is the fence?

It's gorgeous, I love the warm, varied tones. WIll it grey over time?

The wood is Ipe, if you install in 'easy to get to' areas, and apply the correct wood oil every 6-12 months - it should maintain the rich brown color. I prefer the way cedar wears, if you are looking for nice silvery, grey tones.

Thank you so much, Oana, also your husband and friend. I am going to trust them and take their advice that liming wax is not the best solution for the bench. Also, my thanks to all of you who tried to guess... I will ask our very knowledgeable painter-decorator what would be the best way to take care of this beauty and let you know. I’ll leave you now with a pic of our deck where I’ve just used some of the other things I found in the barn to “make it pretty” :))

If you are set on painting then go with a contrasting colour to the paving, a darker tone of grey for the horizontal slats. As for paint I would choose the Valspa decking paint from B&Q as this is much better wearing and seems to have a better coverage than fencing paints. Also this being designed for decks it does not need as much repainting as fence paint and to some degree be washed down. As for the fence around the lawn area it depends if you are planting around the borders or not. Whatever you do there the fence will go green under the overhanging foliage and will need to be cleaned on a regular basis. If it was me I would be tempted to leave it to weather naturally as once you start painting a fence, you will always be painting it to keep it looking good.

thanks for your comments, I was worried about continuing the cream theme incase it doesn’t match well..the fence up is a cream with a yellow tinge to it so not the easiest to match. I was thinking about a dark brown colour like Cuprinol seasoned oak? Then I’m not sure what colour for the planters. does a darker fence make your garden look bigger or smaller? thanks, Louise

Sounds good. Be aware that watering the plants every day can become a chore. I was thinking a picket fence can look great, especially if it’s painted grey to keep it modern and not twee. They’re also quite cheap at about £25 per 6’ panel (3’ high). How about making one pallet up, painting it and then planting it up and if you like it then give it a go with creating a fence.
