How to get a fabric seat cover to stay on our leather couch

We have two leather couches with fabric seat covers to disguise the torn seats. These are lovely and soft, elastic, really excellent, except the ends always rise up off the seat when you sit on them. The seat covers are the right size for the seats but the elastic doesn’t keep around the bottom. Photos attached (please excuse the mess as we were in the middle of a temporary clear out!)

We initially tried safety pins to secure but they couldn’t withstand people sitting (lots of kids on the house).

I had considered buying a staple gun to staple it but then considered that the fabric might tear from the staples which would be really unfortunate as the covers are great.

I wonder if I should buy a hot glue gun or if anyone has any suggestions. It’s two three seat sofas. Thanks!

Velcro is probably your friend here. You can attach the sticky backed stuff to the base or under the seat if it will go that far and to the bottom of the cover.
Or attach ties to the cover and tie together across the underside or around each leg.

You can get elastic with clips used to keep fitted sheets on beds. I saw them on amazon once. Not sure what they're called thou

Although we've gone for fabric in this poll, we know that for most of us this very much comes down to a choice between comfort and aesthetic. Leather is a bit more of an acquired taste when you're talking about comfort, whereas the right fabric sofa comes with comfort built in. If like us you love great textile design, a sumptuous fabric sofa is definitely an opportunity to explore the work of some well established textile designers like Margo Selby or new breed upholstery & textile design houses like Native Flok in Edinburgh. Okay, so you may just be looking for a lovely, comfortable sofa you can curl up on and watch Strictly, but even then, if approached with a sense of adventure, navigating the brave new world of textile design can still be very exciting stuff!

Hello christjne, I am just getting a few images for you.. Hold on.. Oka do some that are rather good.. Also their faux flower collection is really good. This one is from them and also their velvet in Porridge and Pale Sage could be nice along with Mole colour and Caviar is one they have too that would work possibly... .. There is also the option of throws and they have one in Mole and you could also think of stones and other shades of earthy tones... Group with 1 plain mole colour to give accent but I'd say 1 of each together on 1 or 2 sides and a throw or two for the sofa.. You may find some others you like too.. They also have Mirrors and the Cesario large could be very nice, it has a nice bevelled frame with dark wood and accent of gold that would be gr8 with the dark sofa.. All depends on budget as I have many more suggestions including antiques but for something under the one roof as it were... : ))

Just had a thought ! The window seat idea is nice, and they do look pretty, however are really for occasional use, and not comfy for watching T.V. So, do you need more permanent seating or are we just doing 'aesthetically pleasing'? You could have the window seat without the need to move the radiator as it's a messy job and apt to ruin the nice boards already down. Build the seat around the radiator and finish with a Jali panel in front that will let the heat escape. https://www.jali.co.uk/products/fretwork-panels/fretwork-panels.cfm. If you have the room, i'd probably go for this and the fireside armchair. Have your cake and eat it!

A deep neutral colour rug to help bring the furniture together with a silver riveted metal coffee table and Tassimo (or similar) coffee machine. OrThis is a bit disjointed, I don't have decent soft-wear on my computer but you get the idea. Still a curve in the sofa for a cosy get together feel, solid colour designed chairs with metal and glass occasional table and a fluffy rug for that warm snuggly feeling under the toes.

I used non-slip on my leather sofa- the stuff you put on the floor to stop rugs sliding. It did help keep sofa blankets etc in place but I must confess a fabric sofa (which I now have) is much easier!

Alternatively, could you get the back and seat cushions recovered or do it yourself if you have a sewing machine?

Thanks for the kind suggestions so far. Velcro is likely to be too weak for the level of strength we are looking for - elastic hasn’t worked due to the force of people sitting on the sofa.

The seat cushions are sewn onto the base of the sofa itself so they can’t be lifted up to put the seat covers under the seat itself. The sofa came like this.
