4ft wide internal french door?

Whilst having other works done we are considering widening an 800mm wide door to 1220mm (48"). It would be between hall and kitchen diner.

Does anybody have experience of this size opening? Have you found each leaf too narrow and a pain to always have both open, or was it ok? We can't go any wider.

Use a standard door with a sidelite. You'll use one door most of the time and 1220 minus the frame is too narrow for two doors, unless they're the restaurant type (open both ways, no lock, don't know the english word for them)..

yes, that's an idea to think about, thanks.

That also reminds me of the offset French doors where the sidleight is a small opening leaf, although I only get upvc versions when searching online and don't want to be spending bespoke money.

Hello. Those doors are beautiful and do not need glass that will block your view and compete for attention. My suggestion is to have clear glass. If you can find old style antiqued glass, or handmade glass that would be my vote. Otherwise just use plain glass. The key is the view through the doors (both ways). The doors will function as a frame so arrange furniture accordingly. I suggest new long curtains that hang closer to the ceiling. A beautiful neutral linen, or something that excites you. If you hang a vibrant or patterned curtain then your black sofa (is it a chair?) will not dominate the view through the doors. If you elect for a neutral curtain, then you may want to relocate the black sofa in favour of a more neutral piece. Beautiful home, what we can see of it. Good luck!

Hi John Thanks for the plan. We’ve discussed your dilemma with our in-house architect and he has some suggestions for you;  "Without knowing the layout of the garden, I assume that the large angled picture window in the kitchen looks towards a nice view and the kitchen door opens to a terrace or usable outdoor area – is this correct? If so, I suggest considering a Folding Door in the kitchen. When open, a Folding Door will provide a full width opening extending the house – and your lives – out into the garden in the summer time. Although Sliding Doors generally have fewer vertical mullions and hence more glass, a Folding Door of 2.96m wide will only require 3-panels compared with 2-panels for Sliding Door of the same width. The minor loss of visual connection would be offset by a significantly improved physical connection when the doors are open. A 3-panel Folding Door will also provide the benefit of one panel acting as a single swing door when you just want to pop in and out without opening the entire door. In the Dining room, will the door be used to access the garden often or is it more about the view? If it is about the view then a fixed picture window or Sliding Door would work. But if you like opening your house up to the garden then consider either a French Door or a 2-panel Folding Door (2L) to benefit from the full width of the opening. Aesthetically the panel sizes would be very similar and complementary to the 3-panel Folding Door in the kitchen." We hope this helps! Emily

Hi Sunny. If you need the dining table there I would definitely go for a banquet style seating area that can be pulled out when required but give enough space on a daily basis for passing sensibly. It seems like this space would really benefit from a 3D render package allowing you to visualise the space and how it will look when finished. You would then be able to try a few different options on the door front as well as the seating area. They don't only allow you to visualise the space saving you from making costly mistakes but you can then also use them when sourcing and with contractors to get your ideas and requirements across more clearly. Bifold, sliding or french?

Hi Laura! I believe the question is strongly related to what your design scheme is for the said room. It might very well be that either french/sliding/bifold doors work best but all in relation to the design of your kitchen cabinets and units, colours and materials (if I understand correctly that this room will be the kitchen/dining area). However, one thing to keep in mind is that if do opt for the bifold doors, they will occupy a bit of space when they open all the way, so you would need that space cleared of any furniture (unless you wish to move it when you open the doors). If you do have the space for that, then that is brilliant. Personally, I think these work best because when they are completely opened, you have an unobstructed view of the garden. In the end, it's a matter of space, taste, design and if it can be done from a structural point of view (as it is an exterior wall after all and having these type of doors can create a big gap/opening in the wall). We have the same size doors between our lounge /dining room and have no issues. They tend to stay open most of the time (they lie almost flat back against the wall so not in the way of anything) but nice in the winter to close off the space and make it feel more cosy.
I personally prefer the symmetrical look of 2 smaller doors than one offset with a side panel.
