Design Dilemma Bathrooms Bedrooms

set up a ensuite in the main bedroom on 2nd floor

Hello. I am puzzling my head around how to set up a ensuite with shower, toilet and sink in the main bedroom on the 2nd floor. Was wondering if anyone can help ?

Assuming you can’t build over the kitchen consider splitting the front bedroom, using half for the bathroom, half for a guest bedroom and then have the slightly bigger back bedroom as the master.

Anyway I could stick it to the back of the main room ? Or maybe change the direction of the stairs to stick the bathroom with the back window by the stairs
?

How large is the bed in the master bedroom? If it is a standard size double you may wish to consider reconfiguring to fit a superking bed. This could be achieved by reducing the height of the 'his dressing' cupboard (assuming you have no full-length garments), something which may make it easier to fit larger rooflights (if allowed). As minnie101 points out the existing floorplan gives you loads of storage but do you need it all? A more radical step could be to share the 'hers dressing' 50:50, have built-indrawers running along the top of the property (where 'his dressing' is), make the top right storage area smaller (or even eliminate), and have even larger windows/rooflights than One Plan suggested.

Completely understand about losing the window onto the garden, however in my opinion the space would be so much better used for a fantastic en suite. We have a similar dilemma in our new home, and have decided to make the entrance to the bedroom where your landing space is, with a window and dressing table (so still visible from the landing), then the bed will be in the main room, and the en suite and dressing area at the back of the room. Not sure if this would work in your space though.

Hi Emily, here are some pictures This is the corridor, we have tried to show the step back between the two walls, there is 877mm behind the mirrored doors. This is the end of the bedroom we proposed moving the bathroom to This end is where we thought the dressing area could go, blocking the first door from the corridor. We have taken down the stud wall that used to divide the room. En-suite which we proposed combining with corridor to make bedroom with door from landing at far end of en-suite. Any ideas would be gratefully received as we are going round in circles with our ideas. Thanks Amanda

Wow, that is terrible! I think keeping the ensuite will help with your house value and I assume you'd have people stumbling up and down the stairs at night without it so keeping a toilet upstairs is a good thing. However, it's an easy fix! By straighening the fronts of the wardrobe and bathroom door, it will calm the whole room down. Also scribe to the ceiling so you don't get that very weird gap which makes the bathroom look like it's in a cupboard! Potentially look at not having the shower and just keep the toilet and basin if you feel something needs to go. However, from the sketch, you might only need to make the wardrobe fractionally deeper to fit the shower tray in (there does look to be a very deep panel behind it from the photos so maybe not) If you want to see this sketched up so you can really get to grips with the space, it will only take a few hours and could save hundreds of pounds if you get it wrong! Jonathan's option is probably the most cost effective one and would also give you more landing space for a future loft conversion.

You could also take down the loss bearing wall between the two bedrooms and pit and ensuite in the middle between the two alcoves.

However, given the size of the rooms, I don't think putting in an ensuite would work.

Thank you guys. I think you are right. I should probably build on top of the existing back extension. I have to somehow preserve the light that comes through the window in the stairs so that the living room and the hallway downstairs keep bright.
