Concealed blinds?

Is the ceiling grove around the edges and before the sliding doors for a concealed blinds solution? Did the ceiling have to be boxed in to accommodate this and if so was any additional depth added? Finally which blinds company was used; we’re trying to find solutions for a very similar project in our own property.

Hello Rebecca,

thank you for your positive comment about our project.

The groove in the ceiling is actually a recessed curtain track. The curtains are made from translucent mesh-like material (sourced by client) and stow in 'curtain cupboards' during the day. At night, the cupboard door is flipped open and the curtains pulled out. You can do recessed roller blinds above the ceiling, but they require quite a lot of space in a void above ceiling level (it depends on the dimension of the drop and the material used), so need to be planned in to the constructiion early on.

We have vertical blinds but do find they can be temperamental - crossing over each other, getting stuck in the tracks etc and sometimes the little loops between them break (we have children...). Also if you have any damp or condensation on that window it can make the blinds a little grotty after a while so they need an eye keeping on them for that. The frosting or otherwise obscuring the lower part of the window from outside view is a smart idea as you retain the joy of the shape from inside. In the Netherlands (and other countries do it too I'm sure) I saw lots of little window displays facing onto the street which were quirky and did block the view into the house.

Elin, How about a blind fixed to the head of the opening for the bifold doors. This will however only work assuming the doors open outwards! The blind should not sit significantly below the frame to the doors. Since the walls are not plastered yet, the blind could be concealed by creating a recess by bringing the plasterboards below the head of the door. Alternatively a modern timber pelmet could be fitted to to the wall above the doors. Regards, Simon

Open plan living / dining / kitchen layout - advice please

Hello Karen, WOW what a fantastic project and this open plan space looks incredible. I feel the positioning of the living area and dining area works well and makes complete sense from what you have said about the views etc. My concern is the kitchen as I feel the current position/layout is a bit of an obstruction and to me the space does not flow efficiently and effectively. I would switch the island around so it sits the opposite way and then you could potentially have your hob on the island which will sit in front of the tall units where your ovens and fridge will be. This way the kitchen layout will work a lot better. I have attached a quick sketch below so you can see what I mean. Also this way it will give you more room around your dining table meaning the whole space will flow a lot better. Have you remembered to consider shading? Standard wall/ceiling mounted roller blinds don't aren't compatible with swing n slide doors unless you were to recess them in a concealed blind box system. Check out our website or give us a call If you want to know more.... www.perimeos.com
