Planning a ground floor renovation

Hi, need some help with some design ideas for some changes I'm planning to make in my house to make it a home. We are ripping out the kitchen and we are about 80% on the details, however, we are also looking at replacing our uPVC french doors and window with a bi-fold. We are also looking to replace the porcelain tiles as we dislike the colour and the fact they are polished as they are impossible to clean and keep smudge-free

My questions are this:

Bi-folds is there any real value in high tech bi-folds vs standard options

The flooring we love the herringbone/chevron wood effect flooring, we are not looking at underfloor heating. should we look at porcelain or laminate?

For bi-folds the higher quality spec the better for both long term durability and thermal performance. However, sliding doors are better thermally and can give you less frame to glass so you can get better views and more daylight too.

Thank you for your comments, the question then is how do i clarify what is high quality as i understand it quality profiles are very important and a U-value less than 1.6 is considered good

Remove the wall between the dining room and kitchen and have the kitchen in the dining room with an island then the kitchen is ‘all seeing’…into the front sitting room and the new kitchen/dining/living room across the rear. I would put a door from the utility into the garage and flip the utility into the rear of the garage along with the wc, you could have an additional entrance recessed at the bottom the stairs, I’d keep the front of the garage for storage and retain a bigger entrance (your current entrance), for guests. i would move the utility entrance along the garage wall to the ’new utility’ to square up the new kitchen/dining/living area

Just on the chimney point. We knocked through between our kitchen and small sitting room. We needed a structural engineer to specify the steel. as part of the work they took out a similar chimney and supported the chimney higher up with a diagonal steel. the whole job was £15k and the diagonal steel wasnt itemised but we had the wall taken out, new plaster throughout, lights, new floor, radiators etc included. so i guess a couple of thousand pounds for the chimney removal to first floor.

If you made outer wall then its okay to build window on the side, your neighbor privacy will be maintained and you can get the sunlight needed, I would advise to move the garage to the front so it can be accessible for a car from the main road, you can still have direct path to the garden from the front if you move the enterance to the right and just put a fence, if it were me here's the layout i will do, it'll give more space for closet, bigger bath, utility room, and additional storage unit, so basically move the wall to the left and focus buildng that side, the previous garage will become the new master bedroom with en-suite

It does depend on what you consider good. What you consider to be good quality is something that only you can define. For some people quality is marble worktops. For others it's teak!! It all depends on the criteria you choose to be important.

Have you remembered to consider shading?

Standard wall/ceiling mounted roller blinds don't aren't compatible with swing n slide doors unless you were to recess them in a concealed blind box system.
