Peelease help perfect my painting!

Hi there, there's a ton of threads on here about peeling paint and I'm about to add to them I'm afraid, as I couldn't find a consensus solution to this problem. Our house has just been renovated. Once the walls were skimmed and the plaster had dried, I applied a mist coat using 50% contract matt and 50% water. Once this had dried I then painted on the water based eggshell top coat.
It's a couple of weeks later now and the paint in the corners of the room is peeling away and it doesn't appear to have stuck when I poke it (I know, don't poke it!). I've attached a couple of photo's. I'm hoping that you all might be able to help me to find a way to solve this problem, as the response to my last post was amazing and really helped me. I did wonder whether applying another mist coat over the eggshell coat in the corners might be a solution? Thank you!

I am all too familiar with this, we’ve faced exactly the same problem with our walls.

I fixed this by adding PVA to our mist coat - my formula is 70/30 water to paint then I add approx another 20% of PVA to that. Works really well.

As for fixing your lifting paint; I fixed ours by carefully scrapping away the loose paint until I hit some that has stuck, filling the resultant blemishes so they’re smooth again and then repaint.

It’s a soul destroying thing to have to do to your lovely new walls I know but it’s worth it

Thanks Jon, it is a bit down heartening, but you live and learn! Any idea why this happens and how you know if the paint has stuck properly?

My first thought is that the bed looks a little close to the furniture across from the foot of it. I might try the bed on the window wall and instead of the piece on the wall that has the door, eliminate it and get two bedside table pieces with storage to accommodate whatever you were going to store in the piece across from the foot of the bed in your plan. I like beige and gray schemes in the bedroom too, and find some live green plants add a perfect spot of color, or perhaps a kind of acid green silk texture throw pillow. My suggestion is to browse Houzz photos and save the color schemes that you really love! Adding something sparkly will pep up a design that you think is too monochromatic as well - some silver or crystal bling? I added some bling-y chandeliers on either side of the bed in one of my bedrooms, which is fairly monochromatic in beige and gray tones. Some of the throw pillows also have a silvery touch in them.

maria galvano thank you, I love them too and make me smile whenever I look at them, I bought them from a Bedouin woman in Petra (Jordan). They remind me of an amazing trip to Syria and Jordan some years ago, travelling independently using public transport and meeting amazing people along the way, both locals and tourists. Loved Petra so much and the local Bedouin people, went back for a second day to have another look around as well as sit and drink mint tea and listen to amazing stories ... and yes, they make my home feel alive as most things in it have some connection to a life lived. Danielle H - The artwork came from home sense. An impulse buy which really probably doesnt link but I just loved them so bought them! Now wondering about putting them elsewhere as worried it's all just a great big mess that will make my visitors get a headache :-). LVT is generally fine up to 27 degrees with UFH but you’d need to check the relevant make etc. A warm stone effect could work particularly if you have the room to add accessories to bring in more warmth? I don’t think a chevron wood effect would give a nautical feel and the pattern gives the effect of texture. I think any wood would work though, just avoid accessorising with anything nautical if that’s not the look you want! Do you also want to avoid pattern in the shape of the tile as opposed to a print on the tile?

I notice that it's peeling in the corners. Is it coming off anywhere else? If not, chances are that the plaster hadn't dried out properly, even if the plaster had gone pale and looked to have completely dried, the joins always take longer. As for remedying it, the only way is to sand everything back and start again. Personally I wouldn't add PVA to your paint as it is a plastic and while it may stick now, it will create exactly the same problem when painting in the future, e.g. paint won't bond to it and will peel off. I would also recommend using a normal emulsion rather than eggshell on walls. Eggshell is intended for woodwork.

It could be that the plaster hadn’t dried yet but in our case some of the plaster has been airing for more than 6 months, alas it still happened.

From what I understand, you need a sealing coat that is thin enough to be absorbed by the plaster that also dries leaving a stable, grippy surface for the paint to adhere to. Without the PVA we found our mist coat was drying to a powder (looks like talc when you rub your hand over the dry surface) so any paint on top of this was sitting on the powder and not keyed to the plaster.

I do agree with the point about eggshell, it’s formulated for wood so that’s probably not helping either.

Personally I think you should have used the eggshell on your woodwork only and used a wipeable Matt for the walls.
Although eggshell is supposed to give walls a period look and a toughness I don’t think it is commonly used for walls.
