Privacy advice please

Hi! Please can anyone help with some ideas to create some privacy for our patio? The developer of the house behind has removed a large tree that was a lovely corner feature and created privacy in our garden and also our kitchen in order ‘to give more light’ in the new build garden. It was on his land and had no preservation order on it.

i think preached trees are a possibility but think they need a lot of maintenance? I don’t want to add some more conifers because I don’t like the ones we have but they do a good job of hiding another house! Our garden is small so nothing too huge please!

Also..we‘re happy for the playhouse to go but will need alternative storage space elsewhere.

I do agree some trees are huge, but how about a nice evergreen shrub? A shrub usually grows 6-10 feet high depending on the species. They can also be pruned into a multi stemmed tree shape. You can buy them ready pruned, which can be expensive but provides instant cover, or you can train it yourself. A shrub that does cope with being pruned is Photinia. Another quick grower and also evergreen is Fatsia Japonica which has a real tropical feel. Ceanothus is an evergreen shrub with stunning blue flowers and is flowering now.

Fruit trees grown on a dwarf rootstock (M9) will grow no more than 10 feet and give you lovely blossom followed by fruit. They aren’t evergreen though. Online supplier Blackmoor have a great selection. Pleached trees are stunning, but they are expensive due to the pruning already done and will need regular pruning. Mountain Ash (Sorbus) is a smaller, lovely tree with blossom in the spring followed by beautiful berries in the autumn. Heres some pics

Hello Sue, I'm not a landscape gardener but consider thinking about the kinds of plants that don't need a lot of care and attention. Consider the light which from the looks of things isn't much of a problem... You have both shade and sun, so factor what likes where and draw yourself a plan.. It's quite a good idea to perhaps create a plan anyway of what you think you might like and map it out so to speak on paper before you embark on a trip to the garden centre. Things to consider.. You have dogs and therefore you want a stretch of grass.. You might want some nice hedging and areas where they might want to take a leak! (if not fertilise the area so to speak! A good earthy mound is good then with some nice aromatic and sizeable plants that will add height and textures and some privacy... Do you need to zone out neighbours? Think of bee friendly plants and flowers. Think of flowering plants for all seasons so that you have colour in winter as well as summer. Hedging will not only provide shelter for birds but act as privacy barrier and also if there is any noise it will help to muffle sounds.. Do you want several areas for entertaining... By that I mean one in the morning sun even if its a bistro table and 2 chairs... You could have one further down the garden... create borders and architectural landscaping with Buxus and other plants that look good in large pots... So if for example you wanted rows of Bay or Olive you can pick them up and move them around... Brick out areas for eating and drinking.. Old bricks can make a nice zoned area for catching the afternoon sun in summer.. Really nice large terracotta pots will give even the barest of areas a boost... Maybe you want to put a small garden shed... One of my favourites is Rosemary, it can be the most amazing bush if allowed to grow.. Bees love it and the larger it becomes the better... the woody stems are gr8 for a bbq skewers. Plus they grow really well if potted too... If you dug out one of those slabs and dug out the sand and soil so it was deep enough to pour in a bag of compost.. stick a small rosemary from the supermarket even- it will grow to quite a size if you remember to water it... So several ideas for you to think about and look at the light levels and make note of where the sun goes so that you can factor in sitting areas for reading etc.. Apple trees and or a fruit tree could be rather nice too... It's a nice size by the looks of the image, so it will be rather exciting for you! : ))

As Minnie says, not a fan of chalk paint on furniture, it has it's places, but for a washable surface with kids around it's a big No No. It has to be sealed and then it doesn't look like chalk paint anymore - and, quite frankly it's a load of old B*** that it sticks to almost any surface - almost being the operative word there. You can paint ikea units. Scratch the surface with a fine grade sandpaper 120 grit....then use a good quality water based primer - we use dulux. ( one coat should be enough with dulux ) Then buy a waterbased satinwood paint - also our preference is Dulux Diamond Trade..............you can pick your colour off any of their colour cards. You have great flat surfaces, so if it were me i'd roller the top coat on with small gloss rollers. You may need to do more than two coats but it will give a better finish than using a brush. Don't over load the roller, don't worry too much about the small air bubbles, they flatten out when it dries and kind of gel together. x

Hello we are doing our hall way, lounge and kitchen in this tile but wanted a nice dulux paint to blend in. The samples here are egyption cotton, timeless, white hessian, f and b peignoir...which i like but looks quite pinky. Any ideas anyone?? Kitchen is cashmere and brown. Thank you.

If you put it right on the boundary, it will grow over the fence and interfere with their garden and may cause ructions. How do you feel about putting it near the bird table, so any growth will be in your garden? Obviously you need access to the summerhouse, but it will create a nice shady spot to sit under when summer arrives. :-)
