Comments (11)Yeah I haven't thought about when the sideboard is in place, with it being white gloss with a silver trim I thought it will still look all the same colour though and still needs something to break it up. I didn't know with being a sliding door and then the patio door whether curtains or blinds would look right on them, I think like you have said I'll see how the area looks when it's a bit more filled with the sideboard and then I can always add curtains/ blinds if needed. i'm glad I've uploaded the other side of the kitchen as I now see it definitely clashes with styles but hadn't thought about it, It's only a small change but I bet it will help to work with the dining room. Thank You very much for all your advice :) A few more ideas for me to go on now, that I hadn't considered....See MoreVelux window size advice please...
Comments (6)Hello, also consider which way your extension faces...e.g. north or south facing etc, if north facing, I think 2 big square windows ( perhaps SK08 or UK08 size as you have a wide house ) will let in more light. If you have 2 huge ones for south facing and also sliding doors, it could get very hot in the summer. I'm in the middle of my extension 3m x 5m , north facing garden, I have 3 velux MK08 which is 78cmx140cm, I've always liked the look of 3 windows instead of 2 but after they were installed I had second thoughts about whether I should have gone for 2 huge square ones instead as I also didn't take into account that we've have just had a dormer loft conversion completed, it takes a little longer for the light to come over to the back of the garden. Looking at your plan, you could have 3xPK08 94cmx140cm. The edge of the middle velux will be in line with where your sliding doors starts so that could look nice. Or if you have 2, you could have the edge of the second velux starting where the sliding door starts? I wouldn't go shorter than 140cm in length because when you are standing far inside, you want to see more window, if you go shorter, the windows will be 'hidden' behind the steel beams, make sure your builder install them so that the bottom of the velux is closer to the sliding doors rather than closer to the pitch roof. Do you want at least one window that opens with a remote control? Here are my windows, it might help you to visualise..MK08...See MoreRemoving ivy - any advice please
Comments (5)Wow, that is a thick trunk of ivy. Well done for keeping it under control. No expert but I did some googling and I would try cutting at about a foot above the base and drill a few holes into the stump and fill these holes with tree stump killer or whichever herbicide you wish to use, cover with a plastic bag or foil then wrap an elastic band around it to keep the rain off. Check every few days and top up chemicals as necessary. The theory of this is that the chemicals will absorb into the vascular system of tree (or in this case ivy) and also kill the roots. The top half when cut will eventually turn brown and dry up which should make it easier to remove. If you decide to use a vinegar method then it needs to be 20% acid strength rather than the 5-6% you get in supermarkets. Not sure how long this would take to work or even if it does work but I imagine 2-3 weeks before you see any results. When you dig foundations for new extension try and remove as many roots as possible but smothering them should have little effect on your build. Hope this helps a little....See More- 8 years ago
