Bespoke furniture, not as expensive as you might think
Comments (33)I too always had the thoughts that hand made pieces were much more expensive...but not always the case... And its immensely satisfying when you get the style, size and colours of what you would need... My brother in law has made me just a few piece... Very simple, for storage.. But THEY FIT. just where they need too.. I love wood.. My Dad was a French cabinet maker in the early 50's and as child I would sit at the table and watch in amazing ways he worked with wood... Small pieces he would make us simple little toys, or no's... Nothing painted. We were very lucky in our home to have cupboards in the kitchen, on the wall fitted and it was covered in Formica... We also had a beautiful solid wood fireplace... Shelves for Mums little ornaments (which would never touch, look with your eyes only). I too like to work with wood, when having the chance...memories that will stay with me forever.. (Sorry for the reminiscing.).. But yes so wish I could afford to build my own home and incorporate all the things...Made By hand... Thanks for a very interesting article.......See MoreVegan design: Crazy fad or here to stay?
Comments (9)I have several animals but am not a vegetarian, I agree with your thoughts regarding human cruelty. Pleather shoes that don't last as long as leather are a massive cost to the environment and the poor underpaid workers who don't see their children from one month to the next as they live in tiny rooms just to make ends meet. I also noticed some cleaning products now labelelled as 'vegan' are in plastic bottles and full of chemicals...environment again. I remember the body shop promoting cruelty free and not testing on animals in the 80's and 90's. Now companies slap a vegan label on it and sell it for twice the price. There is no answer to the numerous difficulties our world faces....See MoreTo extend or not...Are we crazy?
Comments (17)Hi all, thank you so so much for all of your input. We think we have come up with a plan that could work for us, and have taken many of your into consideration. We see this house as at least a 10-15 year house so think it’s worth spending the cash on. We are working with an architect with whom we will discuss our plans in more detail. The important factors for us, having been on this journey are: Keeping the kitchen where it is Squaring off the kitchen to make it a more open space Make the house ‘ready’ for what we hope will be a growing family in the near future We also don’t want a vast open space (that’s our personal choice) and want to keep our options open. The house is pretty big and with great proportions as it is. This whole exercise isn’t about having extra space but making the existing space work as well for us as possible. As a result, we think we are only going to extend across the kitchen and not the living room, and will have a side door opening out of the new extension on to a decking area which bi-fold doors in the sitting room will also open out on to. Our hope and plan is to also knock through from the kitchen to the sitting room, not sure whether this will be entirely or only partially and to potentially incorporate a ‘sliding wall’ or pocket door set up to enable us to change the use of the space depending on kids, guests etc. This plan may not be what everyone would advise, but we are excited to see how feasible it is and how we can make the space work best for our plans!...See MoreCrazy but it might just work, or just plain crazy?
Comments (33)Oops! Sorry guys, I completely forgot to update this! Well, we did it. We went for the bonkers cat wallpaper and invested in some 'for life' sofas. We used Martin and Parker in Derby. They make bespoke sofas for not much more that you would pay at Next or M&S at significantly better quality too. We couldn't do the room until we had the windows replaced, so it did take a bit of time as our window guy (Stuart Harrison, who was fantastic and has done an amazing job) was not able to do them until mid summer 2021. Here are some pics of the work and the final result. It is really scary with a big ol' hole in your house! Lovely new sashes with architrave. Sacrilege I know but we did go for plastic, but they are really well made and look good. Windows in so starting to do the woodwork Making sure we cannot see pale lines if the wallpaper shrinks! How the heck do we do these corners? Carefully! Nearly there. Now we need to remember how to do school trigonometry to put the curtain poles up in the bay. :D All done :) Different angle from the sofa. We found some lovely art deco style lamps to go either side of the sideboard. The new radiators we chose. Moving the radiators into the bay from the wall opposite was not hugely fun as we had to run the pipework through the cellar. Pipes all very much lagged though! The sofa fabric was from a designer duo in Wirksworth called Blackpop. Lovely ladies and glorious designs https://www.blackpop.co.uk. I am somewhat pleased that the pic of this sofa on their instagram account has the most amount of likes of any of their stuff! :D The leather on the chesterfield is so soft, it is lovely. Martin and Parker did them for us. https://www.martinandparker.co.uk/ For comparison with the original post pic. And here is an obligatory cat picture. :) It won't be to everyone's taste but we love it. The room is now cosy, warm and a genuine pleasure to be in. Thank you everyone for all the advice, support and comments. On to the kitchen next, just contacted you @OnePlan (Concept planners) on that. :)...See MoreT Gray
