Colours and deck

Hi there. This is a stunning home! Am just wondering which ‘white’ and the deeper grey you have used externally and whether they are black gutters? Also, what you have used for the decking. Thanks so much!

Yeah I probably wouldn't paint it - not over stain either. Buy the decking cleaner & jet wash off all the old stain. You can buy a grey stain now which looks like paint but isn't a standard paint. We used grey (ducks back) for our garden woodwork & shed doors.

I would always suggest leaving wood to weather naturally. When it reaches a pale grey colour it is strong and should last for years. Remember, staining, oiling etc wooden structures means that you will need to re-apply products every couple of years. Also, if you plan to cover the pergola then why stain it at all? As far as plants are concerned you could plant evergreen clematis armandii with white flowers, or Clematis urophylla 'Winter Beauty' for white flowers during the winter, even deciduous clematis montana. Clematis grow quickly and will soon cover the pergola. You could also plant evergreen trachelospermum jasminoides for scent or jasminum officinale or wonderful wisteria floribunda alba. As for shrubs you could add cornus kousa, climbing rose 'Iceberg, or rose madame Alfred carriere, perhaps some grasses like pennisetum and calamagrostis - there are lots of white flowering plants. It all depends upon the aspect of the garden and whether or not you plan to plant in pots or in the ground, and how hands on a gardener you want to be. You need to think about framing the view, rather than blocking it entirely. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best. Try, experiment and enjoy. Struggling to find inspiration as to what colour to paint / stain my decking - our garden is directly north facing (although not too bad as have long garden) as such this patch directly behind doesn’t get a huge deal of sun so ideally we’d prefer a light colour.

With a decking, it is always best to remember that you get what you pay for so material quality is paramount. The support structure is also extremely important and a composite option should be considered as you will have no issues with rot. If your budget is really tight, then have you considered looking on ebay or the internet for a reclaimed hardwood? It may look tatty and discoloured however you can generally buy this cheaply and then renovate it with a jet wash before re-finishing. You can rent a great jet wash from HSS which will strip any algae, etc., quickly and leave the wood looking renewed. A hardwood will last for a very long time if treated properly and this applies to the reclaimed option as well.
