Are those pleached Magnolias along the back?

Just trying to work out if you can pleach Teddy Bear Magnolias. Thanks!

They are pleached Magnolia grandiflora.

maria galvano thank you, I love them too and make me smile whenever I look at them, I bought them from a Bedouin woman in Petra (Jordan). They remind me of an amazing trip to Syria and Jordan some years ago, travelling independently using public transport and meeting amazing people along the way, both locals and tourists. Loved Petra so much and the local Bedouin people, went back for a second day to have another look around as well as sit and drink mint tea and listen to amazing stories ... and yes, they make my home feel alive as most things in it have some connection to a life lived. Thank you again.

This is a handsome house. First...symmetry. Can you make the front pillars the same height. I would lower the LH one to match RH. A strong iron railing along the LH side and in the small front piece LH. Keep front door a strong colour....dark green/blue, navy, whatever, and paint the iron railigs the same colout. Avoid lots of small pots...messy and lots to water. You could i) have a narrow raised bed along the RH wall between you and the next property planted with a mix of small evergreen shrubs and trailing plants..small Choysia Ternata, etc., There is a trailing euphorbia (Amagloides ?) which is sculptural but relaxed. ii) Acquire or have built two or three large tree pots. When they are empty, position them in various places, with bamboo canes, to see where they would work best, and how many you want. I would suggest something deciduous with autumn colour and blossom, like a prunus autumnalis; a crab apple; a quince on dwarf stock; a columnar flowering cherry,Prunus Amanogawa....the choice is huge. Avoid cottagey annuals and too much patchy, mixed planting. I would keep pots square, in harmony with the raised bed. This house is formal and urban. Keeo it elegant and with strong lines broken by the foliage and trailers. I needs beauty, not prettiness. cheers

While white fencing isn't for me in a back garden, I have seen loads of pics here on Houzz with white fences and, although they mostly seem to be over in the USA (let's face it - they tend to have better daylight in parts of North America than we do in the UK) I do like the look of it, though. I especially like the whitewash appearance if you're going for a Cottage Garden as it adds a weathered appeal. I went for black in my garden which looks pretty stylish, especially with the greens and whites in front of it. I used to live in a house with a roof terrace and we were advised at the time to not use white on the inside of the parapet walls as it would glare too much. The chosen option for the wall was pale grey (before it was fashionable) and it worked really well. For this reason, I wouldn't have gone for white fence or white furniture.

Windows and render ideas!

I like the house. Plenty of big windows which is a great starting point. Got a bit of an arts and crafts feel to it. The brick from the photos looks nice and a rendered extension would add a nice contrast and some interest. Actually the thing I like least are the tiles. I would be inclined to change the tiles as well as the windows over rendering. I think this would give the biggest visual impact. For windows I’d consider a central sash with side lights given their width. Might seem an odd choice but I think it would work with the proportions. Also remember whilst it would be difficult to change the width of the windows with an older brick house it is pretty easy to change the height of the windows by cutting out the brickwork below although I like the window proportions so I do t think you necessarily need to. For window colour I’d go light grey or grey green which will also give a nice contrast on your extension against a light coloured render (I’m a fan of Sandtex chalk white). I’m a fan of coloured front doors - I like the orange above - but just need to make sure it doesn’t clash with your window colour. Personally I would go with the bright orange posted by Jonathan but if it were my house my wife wouldn’t sanction it (she didn’t). An easy way to get a feel for what it would look like is to use MS paint. Paste in a photo and then cut and paste over windows doors, tiles, etc . It’s actually really easy and gives a surprisingly good idea of what might work. Anyway, good luck.
