What do you think I should do about this old dresser?
Comments (25)wow stellahome, what a grand house and entrance! I'm intrigued! Do you have many original features left in the house? servant bells maybe? :) Post some pictures for us! I am very familiar with lassco, in fact I currently live 5 mins away from there, and pop in often, they have many wonderful items which really enhance an old house. Took a couple of more pictures today of the dresser, as even though it looks very worn, look at the dovetail joint details! They certainly don't make them like this anymore (unless you pay a hefty price for it!)...See MoreWhat to do with this 1950's corner bench?
Comments (7)I found an indentical one on gumtree but like you couldn't find a price as it was sold. Personally I'd reupholster it in a very similar fabric (is it vinyl?) and enjoy it. I'm not sure how it affects value but many antique sofas, chairs etc are reupholstered as the fabric obviously has a shelf life. I think it's fab though, any more gems?! I don't know if this article helps at all https://blog.thehighboy.com/what-to-consider-when-reupholstering-antiques/...See MoreShould I replace these old doors with new ones?
Comments (25)Hi, it really does depend on the reclamation yard some are much better than others, I would have a look at a few and dont buy doors which have been sitting outside. I can't see if you have said where you are but just as an example somewhere like Frome reclamation is great, Karl has a fantastic range of doors stripped, labeled with size marked on and ordered by style all ready to go https://www.fromerec.co.uk/reclamation/doors page 6 has Victorian/ Edwardian doors . Also as E D has said have a look on ebay as you never know what might be near you and a good few yards also sell on there. The other thing to watch is that if you do find the perfect doors leave them in the house for a while before hanging and painting to ensure they acclimatize to the humidity and temperature of your home, this may sound like a pain but it will reduce any potential for cracking or shrinkage. Good luck hunting, it is definitely worth it as the house will always look right with the correct doors....See MoreShould I keep original internal doors?
Comments (61)Sorry I haven't read the comments (too many) but if you are considering keeping them, I'd send them off and get them dipped. If they come back in one piece then go from there. It may be they come back with a lot of damage, some panels may need to come out - but you can always update with fluted glass panels etc. If they come back and were full of filler etc and bad condition then sand, fill, sand again and paint a dark shade. You can make them look beautiful if you want to. It may be they come back in good condition! In which case you can stain and keep natural. I'd probably replace all the hardware though....See MoreUser
