Hi - This paving was specified by the architect so unfortunately i don't know where it came from - however London Stone has an excellent selection and will be happy to send you samples so I would go to them for ideas.

First the good news - terraces are brilliant and make for a really interesting garden space. The bad news is that the rendering looks to be a fairly poor job; see the edges not finished properly - opening the render up to premature decay. Damp is accumulating at back of steps because they do not have a forward gradient for run off, visible lines of block work underneath probably means that no scratch coat was applied before the top coat, so cracks like those on the top wall may well spread. Also I cant see any drainage holes in the walls, so damp might build up behind them and this might be the cause of the paint peeling on the middle steps. The tiles/slabs that have been placed on top of them are not really coping stones - so you will always get dirty water run off marks where the the pointing gaps are between them. Proper coping can be butted up very tightly so there is no joint for the water run down, also they have a drip grove underneath so that water cannot run back via surface tension down the walls. Depending on how seriously you want to make this a quality garden that will last for years you need to decide if you'd like to make the structural aspects thoroughly sound, before thinking about colours of walls, btw, If you paint the walls a dark colour it will make the garden feel smaller imo, otherwise you could plant and landscape and be faced with crumbling render ruining it. I'd get the ivy off of the fence on the left, it is making the space in the foreground feel much smaller and may be obscuring a rotten fence. You can get summerhouses with the shed bit built onto the back - accessed by a side door, which would preserve your route to back gate. Even better - commission a bespoke structure to make the most of your space. I'd ditch the grass (hassle to mow in restrained spaces, hauling mower up and down) and have seating/hammock areas on each terrace using lots of diaphanous plants like Phyllostachys and Genista aetnensis, Psuedopanax, grasses, or columnar plants. I'd freeform plant (without 'borders') through aggregate mulch - slate/gravel base augmented with drifts of cobbles/flints/shells ect. Sorry for the ramble but thorough assessment of structure before the fun bits can pay off.

You should be able to guide a Garden Designer to what level of design you want from a consultation. It is worth considering that Designers will be able to offer different levels of planning, such as with all the materials and planting specified or just as an overall layout. I offer initial consultations where I go into a description of a concept, as well as my understanding of what my client wants. Then I add some specific pointers and advice. My quote for further design work is tailored to what they have asked and/or what I believe they need. As has been hinted at above it sounds like you need a Masterplan, that is a general layout for the whole area and then perhaps more detail for the an area closest to the house. Most Designers would be very happy to come back in later years and work out the detail of other areas in the future or you may be confident later to do some or all of that yourself. Some Designers will also be willing to help you by visiting on an hourly basis to assist in how to get the garden made.

Very tidy garden, but it just needs that “something” doesn’t it? How about creating an Islamic style garden? All about water and tranquility with lots of straight lines. You could add a bowl shaped water feature or a fountain in the middle, with a path leading up to the fountain, and then leading to the borders behind it. Water fountains are very popular now and they usually come complete with a fountain and a long lead, usually 32 feet, with a plug at the end. I have an urn shaped one and it was so easy to set up. I would also add more shrubs and flowers in the borders, although I realise not everything is out yet. You can use the same paving you already have or go the full Monty with colourful tiling. The last picture is my water feature urn which is actually resin not stone. This is the sort of thing I mean:

As others have said, if you cut the grass at the back and remove any obvious weeds, then you’ll have your “canvas”. I wouldn’t use a designer as a) I’m Yorkshire and far too tight and b) if you don’t know what you want yet, you’ll be in danger of really going OTT, to find out later, it’s not really you. D never really had a decent garden and moved into a new build over 10 years ago with a landscaped garden, I then filled a lot of gaps as I didn’t take into account, that plants grow. (Who knew?). 5 years later, I realised that I wasn’t that much of a gardener and that spending hours and hours every week tending it wasn’t my plan, so we stripped out loads of smaller plants and simplified it. If you want to sit out and enjoy it with fiends and family but don’t want to spend ages looking after it, then go for shrubs around the edges. If you want a new hobby or to test your gardening skills and like-ability I’d create a tiny herb patch near your door. This will give you an idea of whether you like gardening or not. I wouldn’t try and create your masterpiece in one go. Measure it all and play around with different designs.(PowerPoint worked fine for me) and then do a side at a time. As for your front garden, to be honest I’d tackle that first as it’s what you see every day when you come home and it’ll look lovely at Christmas. Just turf where it is, as I see it already has edging, again just cutting that and treating it with lawn care should be fine for now. A pot either side of the front door and then decide on the driveway. The resin ones do look nice, we have block paving that also looks nice but still has to be weeded and fresh sand brushed in between the bricks every year. Whatever you decide, have fun doing it.
