what is the backsplash color and material? I have the same counters and don't know what to go with for the back splash.

Hello Mimi, the tile used in this kitchen is Pietra Art's Premier Marble in the Makrana color in the polished finish. Please let me know if you have any additional questions about this project!

We vote tiles! If it was my kitchen (and mostly because I'm a messy cook) I would be inclined to tile (or glass backsplash) anywhere that might need to be wiped down-e.g. behind cooker, along any counters where I might be doing any food prep. This gives you plenty of options-you could tile behind cooker and counters in metro/subway tiles, but be careful as it could look busy with the granite and wood grain of kitchen-it will depend on the grout. Alternatively, you could use big clean glossy tiles like this marble look above.

If your budget will allow, consider a wider upstand. Rather than the standard 100 mm (4 in) I assume is priced in, maybe consider 150 or 180 mm instead. The added height may catch additional splashes and extend the life of your paint, but will still give you the seamless look you are after. Per the previous comment, choose your kitchen paint wisely and it should wipe clean pretty well. For our white walled clients, we have been using Dulux Ultra White paint with great success. Looks like a great space - enjoy it!

I think vertical for a mid century look but horizontal would also look nice and run the same way as the upstand and shelves. it looks to be a non-rectified tile btw (?) so edges won’t be that crisp which also means a slightly wider grout line as the tiles won’t be identical in size. If you go for horizontal I’d just have the shelf slightly higher so 8 x tiles plus a minimum of 3mm grout allowing for tile size variation. Given the variation in size I’m not sure I’d opt for a dark grout?

I agree with the builder, that work is shoddy and unprofessional and I would not be happy looking at that in my kitchen. It looks like a DIYer has completed it. In fact I call it a HUTH house! When I watch Homes Under the Hammer, often people buy a house and either do the work themselves or get their mates to refurbish and lots of them end up looking poorly finished for the low end rental market. Any chance that you could ask him to remedy the work though unlikely as you’ve already paid for it. Really sorry that this work was completed in this poor way.
