Stairs dilemma
Comments (28)I painted the stairs all the way across as it was just as quick as trying to paint just the edges. I had intended to add a runner but liked the look so much I haven't done. The bottom two stairs are curved and I couldn't work out how the runner would sit over them. I used floor paint but it does need repainting every year or two, so it's not the most practical solution....See MoreStair nightmare
Comments (10)Normally I like a painted, period staircase, but you effectively already have a suspended staircase. Paint and live with it until you can do a glass banister properly. Treads and risers can be painted and a runner fitted. Here is the staircase in our last house (1938 semi), before and after painting. I actually changed the spindles to something more ornate! We never finished decorating so forgive he fact that the walls were bare. We unexpectedly sold the house this summer to do yet another renovation, which we are just finishing......See MoreHelp for carpet
Comments (5)Hi minnie101, I can only reply to the boucle part of your question, we had this carpet fitted in 2017 when we bought our house (sorry, all my google drive photos feature our cats and since we live abroad at the moment, that’s all I have got). It is very easy to hoover, we have a normal Miele. I thought first of getting a runner with the whipped edges (I still like the runners better than fitted stair carpets but with all the quarter space and split landings, kite winders it was getting to be rather expensive...plus the original stair treads and risers are pine, which was wire brushed and then painted over and over)....See MoreStair case design dilemmas
Comments (19)Whaou your current staircase is lovely! So stylish and different. Very unique. I do realise it is not what you want to hear :) but honestly, maybe consider keeping the railing, rather than going for glass? It give so much more characters to a house vs all modern staircase.... If new and glass it is, then I agree that pin+glass would not work. Maybe stain it/paint to match your doors, so you have an harmonious feel? I think it may look nicer and more coordinated than with the oak cladding. The cladding is unlikely to match exactly your floor too so I would worry that it would clash. If your are not considering keeping your current railing, please do consider selling/donating them (EBay or Freecycle) as they are too lovely to be going to the tip ;)...See MoreSam Potter
