How do I make this large kitchen homely?
Comments (26)Hi - how I envy you that big kitchen; mine is tiny. I went for a warm cream with a splashback in bright red. You could perhaps add bright red accessories? I would go for a slightly darker, warmer shade of the walls, I would put large, bright ornaments on top of the cupboards (I particularly like hens and roosters) - they do need to be big though, otherwise they'll get lost. I'm sure you're going to have a table and chairs; my choice would be light wood, round, and maybe brightly coloured chairs to contrast the black tiles. Or, you go opt for a corner seating arrangement with comfy upholstered seating and bright cushions. Plants are an absolute must for me and that corner, to the left of the door, is crying out for a beautiful palm.....that is, if you don't opt for the corner seating! I would then place my plant(s) at, or near, the end of your counter. There are some very realistic "fake" candles around now - I have two which I've put into Moroccan style lamps which are only about 10 - 12" high. One sits of the floor, the other on a small table; they're pretty through the day and at night they flicker and cast patterns on the walls. I wish you well with whatever your choices - have fun and play around with it....See MoreWhat colour island with cream kitchen and black worktops?
Comments (10)Putting white or light grey on a kitchen floor is asking for martyrdom - fine if you're what Freud called a housewife psychotic; but if mopping your floor three times a day isn't your thing, go for a darker floor and get your reflected light from the vertical surfaces of the island. I would also be wary of white next to cream - call me old-fashioned, but it's one of the few combinations that simply jars. Have you considered having a bold and bright colour for the island as a counterpoint to all that tastefully restrained grey, black and cream?...See MorePorcelain Tiles in very large open plan area, inside and out.
Comments (21)As a tile importer and retailer, it's very rare for a porcelain tile to crack if installed properly. I'd not recommend juggling your Le Creuset to test the theory though... More and more tilers are using a decoupling matting such as Durabase to take as much movement out of the tile as possible. We also supply flexible adhesive and grout, so with a properly flat floor, it's rare for us to get a call from a grumpy client. We supply a lot of large format "infinity" look tiles, where you have an identically sized anti-slip External version of the Interior tile. Most are 8-9mm, so need a concrete base that mirrors the internal floor. If there is a 20mm version, then a sand & cement base can be used. As for kitchens, always tile the entire floor before the kitchen goes in. This means that the kitchen installer has a blank canvas to work on. It also means that the floor is completely sealed, so the chances of liquid ingress under the tiles (under the units) is pretty much nil. Finally, it also means that if you have any white goods that fail under the work surface, they can just be slid out, rather than having to remove what could be long an heavy lump of marble or granite to get them out. The additional cost will be negligible compared to an insurance claim......See MoreWhat colour for contrasting island and worktop?
Comments (42)Thank you both for responding. I really appreciate it Sonia Im not sure abut a very pale colour especially on the island which is really dark grey. I think it would be high maintenqnce to keep looking clean and a bit too much of a contrast? If you have found any similar I would love to see. I have looked but nothing that grabs me Marylee I put the worktop sample upside down sorry! I know what you mean re more wood though I have seen lots of examples where people have done it successfully. I guess it would have to match exactly. It's giving me such a headache!!...See MoreDaisy England
