Are floor to ceiling wardrobes imposing
Hello. So I’m about to start decorating our master bedroom and id love to go for floor to ceiling wardrobes in the two alcoves of our bedroom but my husband thinks floor to ceiling wardrobes look too imposing and make the room feel smaller. Is he correct? I think he might have a point but would love to hear your thoughts. I’ve attached photos of what the room looked like when we bought the house. The furniture is all gone and I think to was all a bit too matchy for my liking. I prefer wardrobes painted the same colour as the walls. And a more contemporary feel to the bedroom.

4 years agoNo, I think they’ll be fine. You could have doors painted to match the walls. Hopefully the wardrobes will address all your clothes storage needs thus eliminating freestanding furniture making the room feel less cluttered. We often use Ikea Pax wardrobes, then build in to the tops and sides for a more finished, classy look. By using a combination of the two depths of frame you can ‘wrap around’ the chimney breast.

Fitted wardrobes for large vaulted ceiling bedroom
Comments (7)Hello, I have searched for some images for your inspiration. As you on the the first two images, there is gap as well between the wardrobe and ceiling. If you believe visually it works for you, than go ahead. Alternatively, you could place some baskets as well on the top for extra storage, personally I would consider it if that helps. On the last two images, you can notice that the ceiling is high and the wardrobe is reaching the ceiling. I have the same in my bedroom and love all the space I have even if I need a chair to reach the top cabinets (I store there stuff I hardly ever use), so all the space is used up for storage. I say don't move sown your built in wardrobe to the middle. On the right I love that sitting corner, where you also have light entering your room. Looks pretty nice, stick to your plan! I would use the whole height and if you painted them in a complementary colour (not necessarily the same colour)to your walls then they’ll blend in.
We have full height wardrobes and they really maximise the space. We didn’t a large bank of wardrobes so we keep summer clothes and holiday gear in the ikea plastic boxes in the tops and then swap them over for the winter woollies in the summer.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoI personally would go for floor to ceiling to maximize the storage space. Wardrobe can be set a bit lower to accommodate matching coving if you have it in the room to create a 'super built in look '

4 years agoI have floor to ceiling wardrobes and they are great, no dust collecting on the top! Just choose a pale colour otherwise they can look heavy. Here’s mine, they are by Sharpes in a stone colour and I did the walls in a slightly lighter shade called Dulux Egyptian Cotton.

4 years agolast modified: 4 years agoKaren, don't go right up to the ceiling, it will look ugly - and smaller (as your husband has pointed out). Stop just short of the ceiling, the storage capacity will not be reduced. Then add a decorative moulding on top of the wardrobes, and blank-off the tiny gap behind to avoid dust. And, as others have said, choose a paint colour which harmonises with the walls. Hoping my photo from my own bedroom may be helpful. Although it may not be obvious, the wardrobes sit within the chimney breast alcoves, and the drawers are where the fireplace would originally have been.

4 years agoSo I’m really tempted with the full wall of wardrobe doors to hide the alcove. Fpund this photo which I can stop looking at - love the feel of this room so much. But a whole wall of wardrobes would only give us a 55cm gap between the wardrobe and the bed. Is that too narrow? Is there a minimum size for a room to be able to take full wardrobe walls. Also the wardrobe would jut out by about 10 cm in front of the bay. So that’s not ideal either.

I found out something that I’d thought I’d share here for people looking for wardrobe advise. There’s something called the magic ratio (1.618) which means 1 side of the furniture needs to be 1.618 longer than the other for it to look proportionally pleasing to the eye. That’s what was making us instinctively feel the wardrobes would be too big. as much as I would love To have the wardrobes fit neatly into the alcove it’s way too narrow. I’m slanting towards buying these ready made wardrobes which are only 50cm deep.
