Decorating to create a Sunny study

I’ve recently moved home and want to convert our featureless spare room into a warm, energising and cosy home office/relaxation space. It’s currently got a loft ladder in to the converted attic bedroom, but will be installing a proper set of stairs soon, which will decrease the room size. When complete, it’ll be approximately 9x6.5feet.

It has a dark grey carpet (pictured) and I’d like to use yellow but don’t want it to feel like a nursery or too much, so am contemplating painting one long wall yellow (attached are options I’m considering) to minimise this but not sure what to do with the rest of the room, or whether to leave it white? I’ve also found a coral pink colour that’s lovely, Crown’s Quick Kiss, that I’d love to incorporate. I’ve seen examples of ombré walls I was thinking of using the coral and yellow on but think if this were replicated on all four walls it would be too much.

when finished it’ll contain a desk and bookcase (to be painted any colour) and a comfy armchair for reading. I’ll use fairy lights as the main light source and want it to feel warm and cosy even through dark winter nights.

does anyone have any advice they can offer please? it would be much appreciated as I keep going round in circles!

In the nicest possible way, it sounds as though you know exactly what you want to do with the room, but are worried about committing or actually doing it?

There are examples of pink-orange and pink-yellow ombre walls if you google them, so I think that could work and I agree that all 4 walls would be too much. I think the other colour for the other 3 walls will depend on what works well with the colours you end up using in your ombre.

I think if you like it then go for it! it may not be to everyone's taste, but you can always change it if you think it's putting people off when selling or if you get bored..

I did an ombre wall a few years ago that we recently lost due to an extension but we loved it, and I'm still tempted to re-introduce another one at some point!

I’m so pleased to see yellow is becoming popular again after years of grey, grey and grey! It will really go well with your carpet. If it were mine, I’d paint the long wall near the stairs yellow (whether a soft butter yellow or a bolder sunset shade). I think a white desk and chair would look clean and fresh, then you can add coral accessories as well as shelving and plants. I would love to see it when it’s done! Here’s some pics, although some are bedrooms it’s just a guide to see the colour mix.

If you want privacy at the front of your home to stop people to seeing in, then you could either change your gates to completely enclosed the area and have a CCTV system set up so visitors can alert you when they arrive. Or preferably, you could separate the two drives by erecting a fence between the two garage doors and plant a nice tall hedge 3/4 of the way along the front boundary to obscure the view of the main house. You could then reverse round the hedgerow and park the car at an angle so it is partially obscured by the hedgerow, with CCTV and security lights shining down from the top of the garage to give you peace of mind. It would be lovely to remove the gates and be able to look out of your front door and see the hedgerows, and they would also help to muffle the sound of the traffic

interior design is about designing layouts and flow of a room or area. It looks at principles such as your daily routine in a room, how much time you spend there, making things easily accessible and in a logical place, looking at lighting, and ultimately creating the most usable space in a given area. Interior decoration is about dressing an area and making it look good, this is where colour, texture and accessorising comes in. An interior decorator will recommend cushions, an interior designer won't (in the technical sense anyway). Interior design can be very broad ranging from houses to airport terminals. Many interior decorators offer interior design too, but in the academic and qualification sense, if you were to do a course for example at KLC, they are treated as two very different disciplines.

You have an amazing room and your idea of a double sided fireplace is awesome. I agree with colourhappy in not having a carpet but a wood floor. From the description of your taste you sound as if you like rustic and homely. A wood floor would look amazing and could be dressed with animal skin rugs or arty rugs or sheepskin - you could change the look with the seasons. You also seem to have some fab retro/mid century furniture on the far side of the room. Maybe you could change your sofa to something either retro or modern (think square - see dwell.co.uk for examples) and keep this style going. Clean modern lines would really give this room a fab look. Also, as the room is both a living room and study, could you move the dining room into this room and the study to the dining room? I think the room's identity as a living space would be more consolidated this way, if it's possible.

We did love some of the suggestions above… but stuck with our original plan! Although we did change the kitchen layout from U-shaped to ”farmhouse” style, with the table in the middle and sink under the window overlooking the garden. The old dining room has become an office with two desks - partly due to COVID and the need to work from home and homeschool etc! We have also moved a lot of the children’s toy storage in here although they still bring things into the main lounge to play where there’s more room. At 8 and 5, they also actually now keep and play with a lot of toys in their rooms, so I think the old dining room will remain as more of a computer and homework room - it’s nice being able to shut the door! The ”study” on the plan is very much a workshop/gym/play room for my husband! We didnt want to sacrifice that space. It might turn into a teenage den later on perhaps, or even a downstairs bedroom for my Nan. The small upstairs bedroom has become a second office as I’m also still working from home (and my husband has too many meetings downstairs!). It houses our sofa bed too so acts as a spare room and my space to do yoga and sewing. Overall, we are pleased with how everything turned out. We quite like the option to have space away from each other and the flexibility to change the use of the different rooms. We do all spend a lot time together in either the kitchen or main lounge as plenty of space in both.

My hallway (the top half) is the same yellow you chose. Bottom part is offwhite, floors terrazzo, doors natural pine with offwhite panels. I love it!

I'd suggest a different flooring, as the grey is.. well.. grey.

Perhaps painting the top part and ceiling?

We've just painted the guest room grey.. little does the bf know, I plan on adding as many colourful accessories as I can find.. and had already been thinking pink and yellow! haha
