Hi Suzie, could you perhaps do something a bit out of the box and choose something that is a splash of colour? Like a found object? Chinese ceramic stools? you can also go to vintage fairs etc. Or some companies source and stock interesting pieces. This is one : http://www.retrouvius.com/stock/storage I think more grey would be dull, more black would indeed make the room feel too small. I quite like the idea of timber for your chest of drawers etc. Difficult to visualise the space thought! Colour choice is pretty personal. I am partial to blues and purples.. but that is just me! Carolina is correct here with recommending a Victorian Floor Tile or Quarry tile. They do come in 100x100mm approx and are in a matt finish. We did black and dark slate tiles in our bathrooms. The plain black actually had a subtle sparkle which helped bounce the light. I never regretted either and plan to do something similar in our new house. The slate bathroom was windowless but the huge mirror overcame the lack of natural light. Go for it!

It would ABSOLUTELY work! You should definitely go for it. My only advice is to make sure you don't go too light with the paint colour on the walls. You need to pick something that has pigment/depth to it, even if you are going for a light grey colour. You have a FAB space there - entryways are the "first impression" for your home.. so picking fab tiles (like the inspo pic you attached) and ensuring the wall colour complements is key. Another idea is to paint the banister for the stairs in black, just to have it pop / complement with the tiles. Can I also ask if you are keeping the dado rail up the walls?
