hello could you please tell me how my tiler can do this no architrave on the window look. do i have to buy a special tile? mt

Thank you! The tile on the jamb portion of the window is just a bull-nosed tile so that the edge looks finished and curls down to meet the tile on the wall.

How about a kite on a wire. Ikea sell wires which you could mount on the diagonal just above the window. Fix a kite to it and then move the kite up and down the wire. It would be a decorative feature on the wall during the day but would cover the window at night. I think curtains mounted on the wall would be pretty and give a softer effect. When you want new windows, do have a look at our 22 members - all have to make their wood windows to our exacting criteria. The frames can be expected to last around 60 years, and they won't need a lick of paint for 8-10 year.

To add coving or not?

Thank you for the ideas and feedback everyone. I love the little windows, I just wish I had taken a bit more time to more carefully measure them out to ensure I could fit the right coving in. The good news though is that I've had a chat with my carpenter and builder today and we are going to try some smaller beading to frame the window which would create more space for some coving with a low drop and higher projection on to the ceiling. We can also take the steps you have suggested @Fern Architectural Studio as a back up plan so thank you for the thoughtful helpful feedback. @honeypoppet I also thought about a picture rail but I think it might be at the wrong height to line up with the window frame. It may work when we change the beading though - I will keep it in mind thanks. @MATH I love crittal windows and doors and had actually looked into getting some for the double doors that lead from this room into a slightly more modern kitchen. They are way out of our budget though sadly. This is also the room that is most likely to have 'Stuff' in it so a half wall into my hall would probably drive me barmy trying to make sure the room always looked neat and tidy for when people passed by. @justin yes luckily that radiator is just a temporary one - we will have a more traditional one by the time the room is finished. I love those doors you found too. We have space for double doors into the kitchen so will either be leaving it open for now or looking for something that may work short term in the hope of affording some crittals one day. Personally I think when houses are attached you have a responsibility to the rest of the street to have a cohesive look- it’s bad enough that people choose different window styles that fit uncomfortably with the house but then adding a change to the palate of colours devalues the road in my opinion- the other issue is that when people personalise houses it green lights neighbours to do whatever they like and it ruins the road. So I vote white windows- you might consider just replacing the glass which would be a lot cheaper than starting again. The earlier comment about the garden is spot in- this will have a bigger impact on the curb appeal.
