What can I do with our downstairs loo?

We moved last year and had a downstairs loo & shower put in, with a little utility space to the side. I have no idea how to finish this off. Tiling, flooring etc. If you've any inspiration or ideas to share, I'd be so grateful! The space is fairly small and although there are two windows, it isn't very well lit. It is off our kitchen and you go through the utility space to get to the loo. The pocket door doesn't close properly so need to find something better there too (doesn't hang vertically because the corner of the door was cut off, affecting how it hangs). We plan on having a mixer shower at the back. Any help would be fantastic.

Hi, How you finish this really depends on how you want it to feel and also what your taste is. Do you want it bright and airy, dark and moody? Luxurious? Fun? Sleek, Traditional? Think about the mood before committing. Practically I'd usually use tiles in a shower area this small but there are so many other options such as acrylic wall panels and shower cladding made from solid surface like dekton. Budget will also make a difference. There are some beautiful floor tiles, but if the budget is small there are also some lovely vinyl floors around. Will this be a wet-room or will you be having a shower tray? - if a wet-room like the photo suggests you'll need a flooring with a good slip resistance. I hope this helps to start with?

Hi Missy, Have you thought about having a shower fitted instead of a bath in the en-suite? Showers can be a lot more space-saving and economical done right. Plus, the technology's come a long way, giving you just as luxurious an experience as you'd have in the bath with options like rain jets, cascade (waterfall-like), lights, aromatherapy and speakers to play music through. What kind of style are you going for in the en-suite? The above are all quite contemporary but we have some traditional bell-shaped rain showers as well. I think there's also something to consider. The drains.............having done a couple of these in my time............ The soil pipe runs from the bathroom down between the kitchen and dining room. If you enclose the whole space and go right to your boundary you will probably end up with the soil pipe indoors. I would suggest that you do not go the whole way across, and for two reasons. One the soil pipe could be moved a little. Two keeping daylight in the Dining Room is better as it may end up quite dark in there if you enclose it. I also wouldn't take away the downstairs loo. I don't think it's necessary, and I think the house will be of better value with it. So, I would do this, as it means you have room to re-route the soil pipe keeping it outside and having light in the Dining Room. The other thing you gain by doing this, is symmetry in the dining room. You are echoing the shape on the left ( the toilet ), by bringing the wall in on the right. It makes the dining area open plan, but still private.

I was thinking that if you boxed the whole wall out to the window but then boxed around the boiler separately (so the boiler front stuck out) then either side you could add little shelves to balance out the centre and to put plants on against the tropical wall paper you want. That’s if you don’t want to lose some window. I would also paper the front of the boiler access door to blend it in. If you aren’t losing too much of the window then I would box across and make the window rebate smaller to account for it. But more work but it depends on what you can live with

How about vinyl sheeting? I’ve got it in my small shower room as I felt it was too small for tiles (so much cutting!). It’s warmer than tiles and is slightly non slip. Mine’s been down 6 years and has fared well. We had the wooden floorboards boarded with ply first. It comes in a huge array of patterns and colours. I think it all came to £250 including fitting. It’s nothing like the old style vinyl! I would go with a completely different style to the wood floor in the hall as it will be very difficult to match. Here’s some examples.
