Looking for pre-made openings in back for cable management. Is the piece wood with metal safe door fronts?

Hi Nathalie, there are holes in the both sections of the middle shelves for cables to run through. Yes this is a solid pine console and the doors are wood with metal trim and metal knobs. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

New dilemma and a bit of a curve ball whilst completing the plans. Kitchen is sorted - changed shape of utility opening up the entrance to this space (double doors) The chimney breast end. My husband thinks it would be better with double doors in the centre - opening up on patio area at the back. Sliding doors still on side (4m) onto other patio. He thinks double doors will be more functional and thinks the window seat and chimney breast take up too much room. Will it make the end look like a barn - also means we don’t have any windows in this space only doors ... and 4 velux. Not practical on a rainy day but want to open up. Any thoughts? Advice? Greatly appreciated - we are so close now!

Hi Joe, in case you are still deliberating :-) I prefer the second layout with the diagonal view from the living room to the kitchen. Firstly, the space in the middle will function as a sort of lobby, leading to 3 different areas - upstairs, kitchen and living room so it needs more room to make it comfortable to navigate. It should be able to accommodate more than one person at a time. Also so often front rooms become dead spaces because there is no direct view into this room from the main activity areas of the house which is usually the kitchen/dining area. The view into the living room will allow vitality from the kitchen to flow into this room to enliven it and you also have the flexibility to close it off when needed for quieter moments. I am adopting a very similar layout myself for the same reason and so refreshing to see someone thinking along the same lines. I think the additional cost in beams will be more than worth it in the long run. All the best with your project!

Hi, you could knock through kitchen and living room - you’d have a lovely kitchen/dining/living space. Then have the existing dining room as evening lounge or snug. Depends on your family situation I think as to whether you want the stairs off this room. You have a lot of doors - blocking one or two of them off would obviously give you more wall space to play with for furniture. Alternatively, knock through kitchen and dining room together; and have a glass wall where I’ve shown, so that your stairs are off a new hallway. I saw something on Houzz but I can’t find it now, where they’d done something similar to let light in; think there was a nook for a desk or storage in the hall too. Good luck x

I think its a question of scale. Your art is not large enough. Some shelves might give you some room for storage and a base to display some artwork. I wouldn't paint the wall. I would put up a couple of long shelves maybe 3 or 4 on the tv half of the room towards the corner. Floorlamps create lovely pools of light. Conside a side table with a lamp. We never use our ceiling spotlights although they are on a dimmer. Look at the space in the day and see where you need the light at night. Is there any furniture between the piano and the tv unit? You could also buy a narrow storage unit with glass shelves. The height of everything is too similar. Do a Houzz search for shelves and floorlamps and/or tablelamps in photo's. There are some lovely examples there.
