updating exterior of 70s bungalow. Gutters?

Hello everyone. We are updating a bungalow we bought last year and we are starting to think about the exterior. So far we have painted the timber windows (which are original but double glazed and in good condition) anthracite. We have also removed a second entrance which was situated only a couple of metres from the main entrance- this has allowed us to create a utility room. We would like to clad where this door used to be (with red grandpa perhaps?), reduce the size of the garage door and add a window (slightly higher than the mock up I have done). The window was an ex display bargain and is a thin horizontal window. We would also like to add cladding to the front of the house where the window sticks out. We were going to make all the soffits, barge boards etc. Anthracite but we’re unsure about the gutters. We were thinking either plain galvanised steel or anthracite. Does anyone have suggestions of how we can improve the look of our bungalow?

I think your bungalow looks lovely with the painted window frames and the purple and white plants in the front garden.

I‘m not sure renewing the guttering would be a priority for me, unless they needed replacing. It all looks pretty good to me but you could perhaps consider painting it the same colour as the window frames.

Looking at your garage mock-up I would say this needs some more thought. Imho this could look much better. Admittedly I wouldn’t know how, but I’m sure the clever people here will come up with some nice ideas.

Thank you so much that was really kind of you! Darker fascias make a surprising amount of difference, which I really like, and I can see how it anchors the roofline back down on the windows. I am pleased we decided not to switch the windows immediately as I can get the outside sorted and may be back pedalling and keeping dark ones even if we do replace them. The green/grey is lovely, the house is in a small village in rolling fields cow countryside rather than the higher sheep mountain country so as you can see in window there are a lot of trees around. The colour seems to settle the house nicely into that kind of environment. My list at the moment is now looking like -Remove stone around windows -Balance the new plainer wall with something tall -Darken the fascia/gutter -Fresher base tone paint - nothing creamy - looking to chalky/grey/green -Pop the front door :D -Poke around at the base of the house to see if the lawn can be pulled back a bit in front of the central wing. (haha - giving a bungalow wings - but you know what I mean!)

I have always been attracted to the Carmel-by-the-Sea houses designed by Comstock...the interiors are often decorated casually, with comfy sofas, chairs, maple & cherry furniture and nature-inspired art and accessories. Big fantasy. In real life, we are retired on Cape Cod, Massachusetts and live in a 1200 sq.ft. condo one block off a large town's Main St. and two miles from any beach. Except for the building and location, we have the rest...not sure if our decor is English casual, English coastal or ???, but I wouldn't change it, except to buy better quality sofa and chairs.

Grey! I absolutely love a different finish to windows. I adore this window: Photo But perhaps you should got for a white internal frame to reflect daylight into your home unless you're going for a "designer" look inside too. You can easily design uPVC windows with online configurators such as this one http://bit.ly/2a556KD (full disclosure, this is a sister website of Sterlingbuild).

You could try to paint the pvc, with the proper primer, but don't expect much from it. Temporary make-over. We live in a small white 1950 home (Netherlands) and have replaced most of our windows over the years, from wood to pvc (with woodgrain, white indoors, warm grey out). Better insulation (sound and cold), less to paint, but immense cost. Do you have the budget to change them now or does your budget limit you to rendering and paintjobs? Same for the porch redo, changing the location of the front door and/or roof shape. Rain in Snowdonia comes plenty, so I'd adress the driveway first. I'd suggest an infiltration pit* a few meters away from the house, with drains alongside the garage and house. Enlarge the 'patio' and steps and add gravel along the front, so water can sink into the ground quicker. *) We've made one by drilling 30mm holes in a large pvc rain barrel, burrying it upside down with plenty of gravel and sand around it and connecting our gutters and regular rain barrel overflow to it, since we have no sewage in the back of the house. You could add a pump to the pit for summer lawn sprays, but we decided not to.

Thank you E D. I have only just remembered to check back on this post. We have now made a big of progress with the outside (wanted to do outdoor jobs while we had nice weather in lockdown!). Here’s a before and after, so far....

Thank you. We went for Siberian larch in the end for cost effectiveness. It took ages to oil it all! It’s a bit of a shame with other side as we’ve been forced to put up a fence to keep the kids from falling out of the garden 😂. We’re planning on putting a little bit of cladding on the sticky out window.
