Garden noise! Help!

How can I reduce garden noise when gardens are close proximity to neighbours?
Will 6ft overlap fencing be enough to block out conversations from 3 doors down?
Gardens back on to each other and the sound travels too easily.

I live in a terraced home surrounded by neighbours and I’m afraid it’s part of the territory. i have high fencing and it does nothing to muffle any sounds whilst sitting outside. People chatting doesn’t bother me but dogs that bark endlessly (bored or lonely) is another matter!

Hi,

Not much you can do about it, sorry!

I've lived in a house that had a 7ft solid brick wall, but it did nothing to block the neighbours conversations.

Noise cancelling headphones?

I am currently involved in a project where we have buried the offending structure partially in a raised timber bed and planted a range of groundcover shrubs around the access - including: Pachysandra terminalis, Cotoneaster dammeri, Cornus canadensis to name a few. Good Luck!

Thank you all for the replies - this is inspiring me! Jonathan and rachel - I think you are right about the steps - this probably is a lot of work to do for potentially not much benefit (and yeah it would be another thing to navigate. rachelmidlands - thank you for the advice on raised bed size, I couldn't find out much info about this on the internet. I would take it if I was growing herbs like rosemary 60cm would be ideal? minnie101 - that photo looks amazing - I love the tiles, it looks almost like an outdoor carpet (are they porcelain?). I would love to see some examples of a coffee-to-dining table, I've not come across that before. Tbh, dining outside just isn't too important for me, but a nice place to relax with friends? Absoloutely. I am overlooked, however, the tree at the back blocks the closest, the neighbours either side I don't consider too much of an issue. I'd love to add a pergola over the seating, that sounds like a great idea! I'd be curious if your plan with the water feature actually worked with cancelling out the noise from your neighbour? I have pretty much the same issue with a family next door and it would be good to have some more peaceful background noise!

Hi, we've recently purchased a new build house and we're struggling a bit with how to configure the garden due to the way it slopes. It's essentially just a 10m x 10m square at the moment with a few squares of pavement, and a slope from the top left towards the house and to the right fence. (see pics) We're trying to work with the level as much as possible to reduce the cost of levelling, and we're thinking of a deck in the top right (sunspot), and a raised lawn in the top left, with some steps and sleeper beds / steps around the garden to support it. (see drawing) Does anyone with any garden experience have any thoughts on how feasible something like this would be and how much it would roughly cost? Or any alternative ideas for the garden? We have a dog so a lawn is essential, and a deck or patio in the top right is pretty much a given for us. Any ideas/design tips would really be appreciated! We're looking for something quite modern, ideally with levels to create interest and reduce the levelling costs (if this even achieves that?)

Hello there, I’ve been having some serious trouble with the annoying vibrating noise that comes out of my sewage treatment plant. I surfed the internet and came across a device specially made to silence the sewage treatment plant noise, It’s called an AVR Unit. It seems alright and is apparently the only device of its kind but I’d really like an opinion from someone who’s tried it. Do you think I should get it? Can you help me out?

Trees help more than fences but an easy fix is putting a different sound in your garden so your ear tunes into that- a water feature or wind chimes will work. You could also go the electronic route and have an outdoor speaker and soft music or nature sounds playing

I too live in a busy area with town traffic, vets surgery at the back, plus surrounding neighbours. I’ve learned to live with it but I know what you mean. Thick hedges can help a little as they filter out the echoes and you can also fight noise with more noise, something soothing like a water fountain perhaps.

We have a pond with a waterfall which makes a huge difference. If I listen out for my neighbours I can hear them, but the water feature is a great distraction
