Please help us turn this house in a home for Christmas
Comments (45)Hi, there! What a great start to this room and a great friend you are for helping this gentleman. 1) I agree with what others have said about placing the two sofas facing each other perpendicular to the fireplace, with the coffee table in between and turning the rug. 2) I also agree that the artwork is what should go above the fireplace, not the tv. Then I think the tv could go on the wall opposite the fireplace, if there is enough room. But if placing the tv in the room with the artwork above the fireplace is difficult, then the tv could go above the fireplace. 3) It's hard to tell where the chandelier is located, but if possible, I'd swag it to be centered over the coffee table and centered with the fireplace. 4) I'd place a large tufted bench with roll arms and small side table or floor lamp in the bay window. This can easily be moved aside or in front of the fireplace during Christmas to make room for a large Christmas tree. 5) I'd go with a medium to dark grey on the walls, leaving the moulding white and LOVE the idea of the accent color of purple on the fireplace wall. I'd also paint all the radiators in the same color as the walls to "hide" them a bit. (You can also have boxes built around the radiators to make it look like a piece of furniture.) 6) If you move the artwork, you will have a blank space between the wall sconces. If those are permanent fixtures, you could place an assortment of mirrors on this wall arranged like artwork. 7) I would find a nice buffet (maybe something like this: http://www.westelm.com/products/parsons-mirror-console-g199/?pkey=cconsoles-buffet-tables&cm_src=consoles-buffet-tables||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_--_-) to place under the sconces, then you can place the chairs to either side of the buffet. It would be a great counter to have for entertaining purposes, to put out an assortment of appetizers. And a design like this, you don't have to be too concerned with covering up or getting too close to the radiator. And the chairs can be stored to either side, but be brought out into the main area for entertaining. Alternatively, you could place a large decorative floor mirror leaning against the wall between the sconces (with the chairs on either side) and place a nice buffet console table behind the couch across from it. 8) To either side of the fireplace in the "nooks", I would put some wood console tables or cabinets (they don't have to be a matching set) in a deep rich java. On top of those, I'd place a tall buffet table lamp and place either one nice piece of art on the wall above or an arrangement of smaller art. You could also do one piece on one side and an arrangement on the other. 9) I would straighten the back couch cushions to make them look more streamlined and place the accent pillows against the back in somewhat of a line, rather than haphazardly. So, there would be one small accent pillow for each of the back pillows or at least evenly spaced out. Golds and bronzes would also look lovely with the greys and purples and I like the idea above about adding something zebra print, too. You have such great pieces to work it, I think most of it will just take rearranging and adding a few things here and there. Good luck! I would love to see the "after" photos!!!...See Moreawkward space in bedroom- help needed
Comments (55)Hi, in that space I would put a nice relaxing framed print and beneath it a shaker style shelf with pegs to hang pretty scarves or hats or bags. I have one in my utility room between two cupboards and it gives a lovely feel to the room as well as being useful. Mirrors are not good feng shui opposite a bed and although shoe storage is great it might be too much between the wardrobes. Pretty colours!...See MoreHelp with odd shape lounge design
Comments (17)There are lots of very minor and/or free tweaks that you can do to the whole floor space which will change the feel and lift it. Firstly move the floor standing lamp (and side table?) out of the way and push your sofa right up with an inch or two to spare before it touches the wall. Then on the opposite end site the lamp (and side table?) and put your telephone on it rather than balancing it on the back of the sofa. By moving the sofa up, the space immediately feels larger when you walk in. The lamp by the door and over the back of the sofa will serve two functions -1. it will make a nice soft over light for reading or relaxing & 2. it demarks room division (which you have done very nicely with the shape of your sofa.) Next move the sideboard to the right of the radiator so it is covering the plug points to the left of the fireplace (as you look at the fireplace sat on the sofa) Hang the wall mirror over it and keep what you have on it already - that's a good job. You now have penty of space to walk around the table especially if dining guests are mingling bewteen the kitchen, dining room and lounge. Lower the height of the mirror and wall art - it should be at eye level. You have lots of lovely art in similar frames. They are mounted a little too high and you could gain more impact by grouping them as they are relatively small in size. Re. the art I would suggest making the frames darker in order to match the dark chocolate colour of the sofa. At the moment you have lots of oak (incl. the floor) and consequently nothing is "popping out" as a feature. Darkening the frames will achieve this along with grouping the art. You have a great colour palette but maybe you could add a colour pop? Gold or organge would add to the space - change the rug, add a throw, fill the mantel piece with vases and containers of flowers of various heights in a couple of colour popping colours and bijouterie. Add texture. What you have done so far looks great but sometimes it takes a fresh eye just to tweak. I am at this stage with my lounge. I'll be posting it up in a week or two. It's finished but it's missing something and I don't know what!...See MoreHelp for a dire livingroom
Comments (11)Fantastic room, great features, and yes needs work. I am taking it there are two walls with windows, one larger (more windows) one smaller opposite each other with the fireplace between and entry door to one side of one of the windows and blank wall for the other. A quick floor plan with layout would have helped. Unless you are made of money lets keep big cost items, and yes, the lounge is fine, how you have placed it is not. The coffee table needs to be replaced and the two lounges opposite each other and the massive TV opposite the fireplace. Chose a style, classical, contemporary or a combination of both. The walls, floor, carpet and curtains are all bland and have no contrast. What is the flooring material under? Paint the room all white and since you have nice features this will brighten up the space, even consider choosing either or both mat and gloss finish, it is amazing what the light does to this surface finish. Replace the curtains with a block out roller blind and maybe a Holland blind into the reveals, with long sheer curtains extended outside the windows these can be on rods, or the big sliding type, can have detailed pattern fabric, but all in white. Do not hang them back. If the floor is timber take off the carpet, have a big deep plush carpet to blend in with the lounge, change the cushions to blend in with the rug and lounge, and give a contrast colour as well, some solid colours and some patterns. For the TV, if the plain wall is opposite the fireplace, build in a low bench off the ground narrow and run it full length of that room, (could be gloss white or natural timber to match floor) which allows the TV to sit on it at the right height, say 450 mm off ground, and to place funky lights or art objects, books etc either side. I would think of painting this a colour to bring the lounge, carpet and cushions in, quite a dark colour in the hue you like, it might even be in the cushions you chose. Yes hang the mirror the other way and that if opposite the TV will bring colour to that side. When choosing anything take a sample of what you are trying to blend in, can you cut a piece of leather off anywhere which will not be seen, millions of shades of red and you want to get this right. Then when you have the rug, lounge and cushions selected, take them or bring in sample pots of colour. When do you use this room, if only at night, look at the colours at night in your room using your lights, and don't forget this room will change colour when the sun goes around, and the white walls will reflect the colour of the rug and lounge. If possible do not select anything in a showroom where the lights are different, take them home. This is how the professionals do it, not by chance but by coordinating everything with samples. If red is not your colour think about covering it, but i like the red. Ros...See MorePillar Construction
