Help for styling and furnishing a new build kitchen please
Hello, we are purchasing a new build home and I am looking for some help with styling and
furnishing the breakfast kitchen.. This is what it is like now (platinum cupboards & tectonic grey worktop)
I'm looking for inspiration for dining table and chairs and bar stools.
I love the crushed velvet, knocker back chair current look BUT we have 4 young children so this is not a sensible option so Im thinking more along the lines of skandi with an art deco feel/theme throughout the house..
Im thinking grey/silver/white with mustard/ocre as a stamenet colour to also follow throughout .. The whole house is currently soft white walls with silver carpet so a very blank canvas to start with
This is the breakfast bar im thinking some bar stools which match with the dining table chairs at and a big clock on that bit of wall
This is the breakfast area I'm looking for a minimum 6 seater table with minimum three down each side. i like the skandi type chairs, the black metal leg chairs and more art deco style ones but I need leather or leather style or plastic chairs as the kids would ruin the fabric!!!
I'm also thinking a nice armchair in the corner would be nice maybe with a seepage small table? tbc
I will add floor plan and sizes in amount too.
Thanks in advance for any help I get.. I struggle putting it all together and seem to end up with miss mash lol

Comments (4)It all depends on your style really. Open shelving can look great if you carefully curate the space but from experience small spaces tend to benefit from clean lines and clever storage ideas. Open shelves look great in all the styled photos on here but in real life (from experience) they can end up looking messy very quickly and glass jars need to be cleaned all the time as they get dusty and greasy in the Kitchen. I'd spend some time researching small kitchen spaces and make a list of things you'll need to store or make space for - pots/pans, kitchen gadgets, crockery, cutlery, tupperware, baking items, food stuffs, spices etc. Understanding your needs first is a good place to start. Tall cupboards are a godsend for brooms and mops etc and if you find a good carpenter they should be able to help you make the most of the space by adding door storage as well. Drawers can also provide useful storage although I'm not sure I agree with those who say they are a more efficient use of space - I've always found cupboards to be a bit more flexible but it's easier to get to things in drawers....See MoreHow to furnish open plan new build. Comments (20)You're welcome. For backsplash: antiqued bronze mirror could look good and isn't too reflective. I also love a lot of the tiles that you can find here, for example the one I linked to could look great: https://tilebar.com/phantasm-marble-tile.html Marble probably has to be sealed, but it's quite stunning and different. Comments (15)Hi. So is it a modern coastal look that you're after? In terms of practicality does the room need to cope with people coming in with with surfboards and sand everywhere etc or not?! I don't know if I'd put the console etc where you put the chairs as it seems more practical for keys post etc and maybe the sofa where you put the console or in the middle of the curved wall? Comments (6)Hello, Wow how exciting about the new house! Congrats! I like your ideas and where it's going - I can definitely see how the corner sofa/snug area will work well. Is there a main living room/lounge elsewhere at the property? I would be a little worried that with the corner sofa and dining table across where the sideboard is (and being that area is your main walkway with glazed doors to the garden) that it may feel like a slightly enclosed space. You could definitely add a small peninsula breakfast bar with overhang for a couple of seats - I would do this around the small boxed in wall area and have the worktop scribed to it. I would then consider having a much smaller sofa and dining table similar to the show home layout. I think the first and your main idea is probably the best layout - I would definitely try and measure the space if you can (site/show home permitting) and see what space you are left with and how the walk though space feels. I’m no expert but I think rattan or cane bar stools would look good and would soften your sleek kitchen. The Oslo bar stool from Graham and Green is stylish, warm but not overly fussy. Or wooden stools with animal skin draped over works. As your kitchen is sleek table wise I’d go for something heavy and solid like a mango wood with cane chairs or benches. The table is from Atkin and Thyme an online company. I also like the idea of a large dark sheepskin bean bag chair with sheepskin rugs in pale grey or white as well as a bright yellow floor cushion. I love your idea of yellow accents. I don’t know how busy you like designs but I’d wallpaper the long wall in a gorgeous paper like Little Green‘s Sakura yellow lustre. It’s spongeable. You could then bring other accents into the kitchen that would compliment that. These things would give the room a warm sunny feel with lots of texture and character and be hard wearing. We have pets and have done that and it works for us. We used a pale grey paint from Farrow & Ball called Cornforth white modern emulsion. Its brilliant quality and you can wipe it clean endlessly. Anyway just a few ideas. Hope they help.

if you want to mix scandi and Art Deco I might look at bentwood style chairs, you can mix the chairs i.e. Plain black, cane seat and maybe go for a pale'ish wood top table with black legs.
Rather than a clock I might add wooden shelves there.
I like this bar stool stool from Rockett St George (it comes in grey but onscreen the undertone looks wrong but they may send samples) as I assume you're wanting quite like a lux look? If not, will look for more texture 🙂
In terms of velvet for an armchair/stools you can look at fabric protectors (although there are "clever" velvets around which have survived my dog!). I also came across a protector from Famaco yesterday

I really struggle putting things like this together but really want it to be right so really appreciate all your help everyone.. the last picture with the tan chairs and cross bottom table my husband loves and thinks would match well but I’m not so sure maybe I just can’t imagine it all together🤨

I must admit whilst I might brave velvet for a couple of stools/armchair that could be protected I'm so not sure I would for dining chairs where the kids will be eating and doing crafts all the time? I might look at your leather options, they are more industrial but you could combine with scandi.
However given the width of the room, would you be better with a bench one side? The first pic is just showing a mustard bench but if your kids are old enough maybe something like the second option could work with the upholstered bench at the short end of the table (for adults) and a backless one in leather or wood against the wall. You could team with wood or polypropylene chairs Etc? The second pic is by Angel and boho and they do a few mustard shades but the ochre looks good.

3 years ago😂 does he not like them or is it just the arguing point as you could go for a leather bench for the kids? I think it would be tight as you'll need to have the table down the garden end due to that door on the left and therefore it will also "argue" with the bar stools. Whilst looking for a leather bench I came across this 2nd pic which is actually a set and I thought your husband might like it? The table leg position means the table can be pushed right back when not in use.
it looks as if it's been paired with the gold Midas bar stools too 😂

3 years agoThanks everyone for all your help.. we have gone round in lots of circles and moved on and I think got there... We are going more industrial crossed with a modern Art Deco style .. so thinking black, with bits of silver and gold with accent colour mustard/ochre.. what do you think here’s pictures I have put together not sure if mixing too many colours and styles together?!
So far have ordered made to measure Venetian blinds with tapes in white with ecru/black tapes for the three kitchen windows and want this tablebut can’t decide walnut or oak thinking 3 grey chairs down each side with black legs and statement ochre/mustard chairs at each end...

3 years agoThese are ideas I’ve put together of what I’m thinking.. I definitely want this big mirror and black skeleton clock and the industrial style lights .. bar stools metal either black or gold but think I prefer the gold.is this all working or am I miss matching?!?!

3 years agoDo yòu have images of the grey and mustard chairs? Colourwise if you went for walnut, I think you'd need to add a rug under the table else it will just disappear into the floor.
just thought of another table you may like, just showing it in different settings

3 years agoLove that table but it looks very expensive 😆 haven’t got pics of chairs yet as havent chosen.. but think will need a leather/faux leather as kids will destroy velvet as much as I love it .. thinking a velvet chair a bit like this in corner though ..they do Sam travel in ash and oak too

would you not consider the matching chairs to the table you found with a couple of accent ones?

3 years agoI think those chairs work well with the table. I've mocked it up for you, are they the Heather chairs from cult furniture? I would probably not mix brass finishes too much as they normally differ and some have a cooler tone and some are warm which don't always work together so I've changed the bar stool to black. I also added accent chairs to see what you think

3 years ago😂 You're welcome I'm just putting your ideas together in one place! I used the walnut table but as I said before I think it may need a rug against the dark floor but see what you think. The rug size may be do'able (8x10), you would need to tape it out when you're in the house so it doesn't encroach on the bar stool area. I have zero photoshop skills so just chose a rug I could edit in but just to give you an idea (Although obviously the table is the wrong way round!). Maybe have the clock over the table to zone it and bounce some light and some marble and brass shelves would look great by the breakfast bar?
