Are these columns load bearing?

Hi,

Could anyone tell me if these exterior stone columns are likely to be load bearing? I'd like to replace them with timber beams as part of a house renovation project but i'm unsure if they are being used to prop up the house?

They look like they are, but I would get a good builder or structural engineer in to confirm it.

Is this the same brick wall that's a fireplace as previously discussed in your other post? If it is, then it supports the fireplace above, and no you probably can't remove it. You may be able to amend it and make it nicer to look at, however, you need a builder to actually take a look at it, because from a picture is impossible.

Miriam Do you actually mean columns as in structural elements or do you mean decorative pilasters? The size of a column is dependant on the load it is carrying and if these are load bearing elements. I would consult an architect and an engineer. There are standard sizes but the choice is driven by the structural requirements. If they are pilasters. Then a starting point would be to talk to suppliers of the plaster replica's https://www.lassco.co.uk/a-pair-of-english-cast-plaster-pilasters or others. Internal changes don't need planning permission, but must comply with current building regulations. If the flat is leasehold, you may need permission from the freeholder.

But look how the upper part of house is sitting on the pillars, more noticeable on nexts doors house without the porch.
