STAIR COVERING DILEMMA
I have an exposed concrete staircase I am looking to find a type of covering. It leads from a wooden ground floor to terra cotta tiled basement.
Does anyone have any idea or suggestions?
- I have discounted polishing the concrete (quality and surface to steps are very patchy) or using carpet (doesn't seem very appropriate to link wood and terra cotta tiles)
- I would really like to use sisal but am discouraged by my local carpet company that is reluctant to supply it, saying that the material can be slippery in the long term

Comments (19)I would always rather invest in stunning furniture than spend money on more permanent changes. In my experience you can make any space look great with the right furniture and decor. Rather than spend money on something structural I would work with the space you have with furniture that works better than the heavy farmhouse style. The nicest furniture in the room is the sideboard so I would build on that. I'd look at something like Gubi Beetle dining chairs to bring in an organic streak. Not cheap but cheaper than building in storage (the next best option) or enlarging the window which won't make much difference - and you can take them with you if you move! You could look at Made.com for a cheaper but complementary table. Then a decent lampshade - perhaps Tom Dixon Etch - a side lamp on the sideboard and lots of plants and pots to empathise the organic, cosy nature of the room. Finish with some pictures in the wall and you have a lovely, cosy, earthy room that feels like being down Alice's rabbit hole rather than under the stairs. Comments (9)Colourhappy, I was wondering the other way. In our previous house our carpet ended up looking dirty in the corners even if we had it professionally cleaned. So I was wondering if having darker edging would reduce it looking dirty... But, I can also see what you are saying. Comments (8)Thank you everyone for your inputs! The box contains the radiator pipes and I guess we could move the radiator to the left a little however then it would be very close to the couch. I like the idea of a reading nook, I already have one in the other corner of the living room :) I think I’m more set towards a small sideboard / console unit with some nice objects on top of it where the banister starts (which I still need to paint as well..!)....See MoreBilly

3 years agoHi Billy, no not slippery at all, I don't know why they would say that. Seagrass may be slippery but not sisal. Fitters don't like fitting it as it has to be glued down to the underlay but I've never had a problem. Another option could be a striped stair runner that picks out the colours from the floors and wall, something like these by Roger Oates.

3 years agoWe have coir in our townhouse which has lots of stairs. Carpet Seller advised us against it but we absolutely love it there and would get it again. It has great texture and pattern in it. It is a little hard or prickly underfoot if you have very young children until you get used to it. One or two patches are starting to wear a little now but it has been 10 years And we have a dog
