Hob to cooker hood distance dilemma - tall wall units!!

My ceilings are pretty tall so I have opted for 900mm high wall units in my new kitchen. However when planning the canopy extractor, I am struggling to decide on the size of bridging unit used. At the moment there is quite a big gap (1100mm) between hob and extractor. I’ve read it needs to be around 650mm for induction hobs. The real life photo attached is this setup.

However on the drawing attached, does the bridging unit which brings the distance down to approx 750mm look too low? I’m not sure if it’s because the wall units are so tall it just looks out of proportion?

i just don’t want an extractor that doesn’t work effectively! I am quite tall at 6 foot 1 so the 1100 gap means I can operate the extractor properly but at the same time the 750mm gap is also fine as I don’t bash my head.

what are your opinions? Help please!!

It's completely up to you and what you feel looks right. Obviously the closer the extraction the better it will work and 750 is the usual distance from the cooktop. However, if you prefer the higher bridging unit, that will be completely fine too as steam goes up!

Unless you like to cook a lot of fry-up's I think a fairly powerful extractor fan should still be effective even when set back a bit. If you really want to position it over the hob you could have a contractor build in a robust boxed in false wall onto which you could have a normal 60 or 50cm wide extractor hood mounted. It would have to be anchored well to support the weight, the electrician would need to allow more power cable and a longer flue but it shouldn't be all that expensive or difficult to do. You'd probably want to make the cupboard next to it an open one or check carefully that the door is still functional.

Hi @J Lo no we haven’t bothered (yet). Generally its been fine. There’s no escaping the fact the long feed does create a bit of unavoidable condensation but it’s nothing major and easily manageable with some workaround measures. I got some cooker hood filters and cut them to size to lay on top of the cooker hood to trap the grease and smells more. i also fold a piece of kitchen paper into a square and put that underneath the motor of the fan so if there are any drips through where the motor unit is screwed together (that is the main culprit!) its well absorbed. The filter lasts about 3 months before I change it. The kitchen paper I change every couple of weeks and just to stress its a tiny greasy drip each time that dries up. I just change it for cleanliness when I check it and wipe the side of the fans, as I would anyway even without that issue. The way I see it is it’s still a much better set up than relying on a recirculating hood that doesn’t take the smells or grease outside at all. So the very minor condensation issue is a small price to pay. I was a bit obsessed with it when I posted on here but don’t give it too much thought now… until you posted and reminded me haha! I would suggest though if you have the option you may as well do what you can now while the dirty work is going on for peace of mind. Whatever your builder says there will defnitely be a little condensation whatever the set up, unless you have a really powerful fan or the extra fan on the chimney - its just physics and gravity that can’t be avoided. Either way you want to get it sorted now in my view rather than later as you probably won’t get round to it, as has been the case with us. That said, like I say it’s not a major issue if you have the same results as us. Only thing a few people have said is that over time it will cause the fan to fail but I haven’t noticed any problems yet so all good so far touch wood

OK, so I am a bit confused. I do not want a big chimney style extractor. My range will be against an external wall. I like the look of the streamline in the pic above, with hidden extractor, in line with all the other wall units. If I wanted to pull that off, would all my wall units need to be 75cm above the hob? So gap between base and wall units 75cm? Just seems a bit of a big gap - currently my gap between base and wall units is 45cm. I will have the height to do it, as the kitchen is opening into a room with 2.8m high ceilings, when currently it is in room with 2.15m ceiling!

There are other options than just getting a free generic design done... we offered a design service. We don’t sell any products, have no commissions coming in from anyone, so are totally focused on getting the design right to suit you ... then you shop around with that design and compare like for like - and buy from whomever you like best ! It’s not free, no. We have several levels of service , but even the most expensive is only about the cost of a good dishwasher, for most average sized kitchens. Shopping around could save you thousands.

Will, I would have had the extractor at the height as in your 2nd image but would have all the units in line sitting at the same height.

Thanks Ellie - how do you mean? Sitting at the same height at the top or bottom of the wall units? They’re in line at the top, if they were in line at the bottom it would be too low. The gap between worktop and other normal wall units is 575mm. Thanks :)

Sorry, yes I would have had all units aligned top and bottom, so would have not had the 900 unit to allow the extra gap needed. But I realise you already have the kitchen....
