Seal/varnish for wood in bathroom - can anyone advise?

Hi, I wondered if anyone had had any success with sealing or varnishing wood in a bathroom? I would love to put a white porcelain bowl sink on top of a dark wood cupboard as a vanity unit in our new bathroom. There don't seem to be any purpose-built ones out there for our budget, so I wanted to buy a second hand cupboard and fit and plumb the sink into it, which would provide some storage underneath. The problem is sealing the wood properly so it doesn't rot from the steam after showers etc. Has anyone done this successfully, with a matt finish? Would you be able to share what you used?
Many thanks all xx
