Changing a window to a patio door

This area of our home is quite dark and the window is quite small, to remedy it were thinking of removing this window and replacing it with a sliding patio door instead.
The existing garden door on the other side (upon entrance into the kitchen) will be replaced with a wall for extra kitchen space.
Has anyone done a project like this before and roughly how much did it set you back?

Hi Sarah, we did exactly this in 2017 and it cost £2000. That included cutting the window out into a door, fitting the doors, the doors themselves, bricking up the old back door and plastering inside to make good. We are in the South East, I could give you the details of the company we used if it helps. Our doors are 1700mm wide and they open totally flat onto the wall outside so when they're open they look great

Hi Mandy, thanks for taking the trouble to respond and for the photo. Love your garden, great that you can enjoy it so much. I think we're now fairly set on going for a sliding patio door, for the very reasons that you mention, that is the uninterrupted view without too many profiles in the way. We've been looking again today and saw a lovely one. We had a patio door in our previous property over twenty years ago but from what I saw today they're much nicer now. We already have a couple of French windows in other rooms but want the new kitchen to be more contemporary. The one we saw this afternoon was at a company called Clearview. The salesman assured us that their doors are the most secure (not sure if this is just a sales ploy or not). Either way I quite like the clear look of the sliding patio door so will have a good look around at other companies before we finally decide where to buy. Such a relief that one more decision has been made. Last week's trauma was finding a good brick match for the extension. Thanks again. So grateful for everyone's input here on Houzz.

Hi Dawn, Love your new kitchen! We offer a system called PerfectFit, which allows blinds to sit inside the uPVC frames of windows or patio doors. They clip in neatly, without the need for drilling, and then become an integral part of the window, which means they won't flap about in the window. The frames are also super discreet, meaning you won't eclipse your lovely new doors. I've attached a couple of photos below which hopefully demonstrate this a little better. I’d definitely stick with a Roman blind for the window. As it’s quite a small window, I’d hang the blind outside of the window recess (a good 6inches above) so that the blind doesn’t block too much daylight when up. You could have a matching curtain, with a pole outside the recess and line up the top of the curtain with the top of the blind. I’d prob just stick with one curtain to pull back to the right across the window as you have light switches on the other side. Eyelet curtains would stack back quite nicely without too much fullness in the way of the window or door. Alternatively, you could just have a track inside the recess for curtains but it might look strange if the blind isn’t also recessed.

I had my lounge window replaced with french doors and side panels back in 2015. Including building work it cost me £3255 for 2400mm of white upvc glazing.

Hi Sarah, I had a window turned into a sliding patio door but it was in 1988 so the £800 I paid has probably increased somewhat! The fitter cut through the bricks to accommodate the new patio door. All quite straightforward. However, about 4 years ago the patio door had seen better days so we had it replaced in upvc by Globe Home Improvements who are in Beds! The owner, Phil Bush, was so nice and you know he cared. Great after care too. Family run business. Our replacement sliding doors are just under 2m wide and cost £1700. They have a website and Facebook page if you want to read the reviews and look at their windows and doors.
