colour advice please

I've presently moved into a Georgian property. the living room is being renovated and the decorators want me to pick the colours by Wednesday.
the paneling and windows (including cornice) are being painted white.
I'm stuck for colours though! I'm thinking gray for the walls definitely but the ceiling...agghh.
Maybe an inky blue colour? I mean look at the size of it!
theres a huge amount if light comes streaming through the windows

What a fabulous room! Why are you rushing?

Neutral paint colours are seriously impacted upon by available light in a space. So it makes sense to test them in situ. Paint chips, swatches. tell you how a paint colour appears, but viewing/sampling them in your room with your lighting show how they will behave for you..There can be a significant difference and you don’t want surprise.

You mention the panelling is to be painted white? Do you know the product and name?

I don’t want to put you off, but you want to be happy with the results.

What about echoing paint colours from major items of furniture or rugs/paintings, that you aim to have in your room? What is your flooring to be? Only it’s far easier to choose paint colours once those things are decided as they are key items.

An alternative approach to spaces such as yours, can be to paint the panelling the same colour as the wall above. Interest and contrast comes from the play of light on the different surfaces and moldings.

The housing association decorators are painting it on Thursday so I need to pick by then.
panels and windows just normal brilliant white, eggshell. at the request of the housing association. I get to pick the ceiling and walls

I’m not sure that would go, but then I am very traditional in my decor style. I prefer my ceiling white or off white which seems to make a wall colour shine. I’ve seen Hague Blue walls with Wimborne White above the picture rail and ceiling and I think it’s stunning. The picture below has Cabbage White on the ceiling. I’m sure others will disagree on here, but you did ask!

Hello, Thank you all so so much for such lovely compliments and ideas. Yes I agree the lighting in the photo does look very white, it’s actually all warm light bulbs so I think it’s just because it’s a photograph. We have since removed the pendant lights in the kitchen area and replaced with aged brass spot lights with a warm white bulb. The panelled wall is natural calico from dulux - all we could get last lockdown where we live. It’s a lovely colour however when I tried it on the plastered wall in the kitchen area it looked awful. I am seriously considering strong white though after having a google it looks lovely! I love your ideas Brett - thank you! We’ve just painted the beams in an off white to lighten up the room a little. Thanks so much!

I would post more photos if you can. Colour is such a personal thing, fashion and trends can play a big part, and that is something that I personally find tricky. Teal in all its forms is very trendy at the moment and all over insta it is teamed with pink. I would try it with more neutral walls first as you can see from these images that the floor colour itself provides quite a contrast with the unit colour.

As far as I can judge from the photos, it’s a great room.

I generally like bright rooms better than having walls in (trendy) dark colours and with your woodwork in white, which will look good, I’d go for a white ceiling.

Do you know what the (colour of the) flooring will be?

Also, what sort of grey were you thinking? Light, dark, ‘warm’?

Lastly, for colour advice (from others here) I think it’s important to know what direction your room is facing.

I totally agree with the above comments. It depends on so many factors such as what the flooring is going to be. If it's as light as you say then I would be taking advantage of it and painting it a pale colour, why darken something that is natural blessed?

I think white panelling can be stunning. I personally would keep the ceiling white. Now colours to paint on the walls will depend on the furniture style and colour. Are those sofas yours? You could go trendy and paint them navy or teal but I saw a picture of walls painted a smudgy green with white woodwork (a bit like F&B Hardwick White) so I’ll see if I can find it.

Can’t find that picture I saw with white panelling, typical, but I found a couple of gentler colours which look gorgeous with white panelling.

white paneling and I'm thinking a blueberry colour for the walls and white ceiling.
the sun shines in the living room all day (when it does actually shine, I live in Scotland! )
Also dark flooring so I think the contrast will be good with the floors, then white, then colour of the walls.
